Christmas with Veronica Mortensen & Niels HP

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Veronica Mortensen (Vocal / DK)Niels HP (Vocal / DK)Calle Brickman (Piano / SE)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)

It takes courage to make a program exclusively with songs associated with Christmas in such a down-to-earth format as this. Here it is the quality of the songs and not least the singers that is at the center. Veronica Mortensen and Niels HP brings the sound from home; they are married to each other and have the best opportunities to practice the repertoire to perfection. They are both soloists with many years behind them on their own courts in the jazz/pop and soul/jazz genre, respectively.

Veronica Mortensen's voice and exquisite phrasing are most satisfying singing soloists on the Danish stage, and Niels HP is known from membership of the leading soul/funk group Ridin ’Thumb, who overthrew the Danish club scenes in the 1990s and 00s. The background is thus in order, and we can expect the classic Christmas songs, plus some that we may not be so familiar with - all arranged and delivered so that the December tears can be allowed to flow. Merry Christmas to all!

Jesper Thilo 80 Years Celebration

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Jesper Thilo (Tenor Sax / DK)Olivier Antunes (Piano / DK)Daniel Franck (Bass / SE)Janus Templeton (Drums / DK)8/12: Pelle von Bülow (Guitar / DK)9/12: Tomas Franck (Tenor Sax / SE)

Jesper Thilo has always been there. He has almost become synonymous with the concept of jazz in Denmark. Jesper Thilo has also been “Mr. Tenorsax” in Denmark for most of half a century. Whatever format Thilo moves in, he manages to make the overall musical expression his own. He is at his best in mainstream jazz, and few can, like Jesper Thilo, convey the joy of this golden genre like him. Even fewer master all the surrounding genres with a similar authority. We’ll be taking through all of the captivating universe of mainstream jazz; from hefty up-tempo and breathtaking swinging medium-tempo to the flattering ballads. All delivered by musicians who live with and in the music, and who always give the audience the best from all shelves.

At these concerts, marking Jesper Thilo's 80 years on this planet, we meet him in his favorite quartet format with his regular group. Three musicians who have the same musical approach as the conductor, and who know how to back him up properly. The four will be expanded with distinguished guest soloists on two of the three concert days. Look forward to an evening where musical enjoyment and big smiles come together in common shared joy.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Malene Kjærgård (Vocal / DK)Calle Brickman (Piano / SE)Tobias Dall (Bass / DK)Snorre Kirk (Drums / DK)

"Her voice goes under the skin", writes the German newspaper Neue Westfäliche about the Danish singer Malene Kjærgård. Here we have an adult and deeply focused artist who masters the classical jazz expression, writes moving songs and is also an excellent performer for both the adult audience and for children and other childish souls.

Here we meet Malene Kjærgård in front of a sublimely playing trio that gives her the best possible backing. In Malene Kjærgård we have a musical personality who is completely confident in her musical point of view and who constantly develops her expression, without seeking the easy and superficial. Is Malene Kjærgård a future jazz diva? Maybe - but nevertheless a musical personality that deserves a lot of attention in the years to come.

OTOOTO

Jonas Due (Trumpet / DK)Oilly Wallace (Alto Sax / DK)Calle Brickman (Piano / SE)Matthias Petri (Bass / DK)Andreas Svendsen (Drums / DK)

The danish indie jazz band OTOOTO (Japanese for “sound-sound”) was established in late 2019 by trumpeter and composer Jonas Due. He gathered this group of some of the aspiring, exiting young voices in the danish jazz scene with a vision of reframing the term “modern jazz quintet”. After only a month the band went into the studio to record a number of tracks including what became their first single Bulk/No Compass. During the spring of 2020 OTOOTO took the shape of a collaborative project involving Oilly Wallace as a composing figure in the band.

The vision of the music is to gather the current flows of the modern world, and channel them out through the instruments. You can therefore look forward to experiencing the sound of tomorrow's jazz, when names from the young generation of top jazz musicians visits the jazz house in St. Regnegade.

Cæcilie Norby (Vocal / DK)Ulf Wakenius (Guitar / SE)Jan Lundgren (Piano / SE)Lars Danielsson (Bass/Cello / SE)Magnus Öström (Drums / SE)

True to tradition, Cæcilie Norby returns to celebrate Christmas with a bang at Montmartre! This year, Cæcilie's all-star quartet will be joined by Jan Lundgren on piano, and there are new inputs to the repertoire of Norby's specially selected Christmas songs.

Cæcilie Norby is not only among the elite of Scandinavia's jazz singers with 15 DMA nominations behind her, but also a leading and critically acclaimed artist on the entire European jazz scene with a streak of releases on both the legendary record company Blue Note and now on the prestigious German record company ACT. She has repeatedly introduced the audience to fantastic and versatile vocal music.

At these five unique Christmas concerts, the audience is invited up close to world-class interaction and improvisation. With her is a Swedish deluxe quintet: Ulf Wakenius is a jazz guitarist by the grace of God, who sat on the most coveted jazz guitarist chair for 10 years, namely in the Oscar Peterson Quartet. Jan Lundgren is considered to be at the top of the list of heirs to Jan Johansson's piano throne. Lars Danielsson has been named "Best International Bass Player" three times by the German Grammy Echo Awards. Magnus Öström is a drum master in European jazz and was from start to finish a third of the legendary Esbjörn Svensson Trio.

Diego Figueiredo Trio

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Diego Figueiredo (Guitar / BR)Yasser Pino (Bass / CU)Jonas Johansen (Drums / DK)Special guest: Celeste Caramanna (Vocal / BR)

When the guitar icon George Benson thinks that an instrument colleague is “one of the greatest guitarists I’ve seen in my entire life”, one should sharpen the ears. Those who have already heard the guitarist Diego Figueiredo can only agree with Benson. Here is a musician who has so much soul and such a beautiful approach to his music that one cannot ask for more.

Born in Brazil, but with the whole world as his stage, Diego Figueiredo has become something of a phenomenon that fortunately feels comfortable in the Danish country. We can expect fiery, heartfelt and exuberant music whose Brazilian roots cannot be overlooked, but which also contain the open and improvisational elements from the world of jazz. As a guest soloist, the beautiful and temperamental Brazilian singer Celeste Caramanna is heard.

Little North: Album Release

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Benjamin Nørholm Jacobsen (Piano / DK)Martin Brunbjerg Rasmussen (Bass / DK)Lasse Jacobsen (Drums / DK)Kasper Tranberg (Trumpet / DK)Viktor Spasov (Guitar / SE)

With a captivating sound and a warm, intense presence, the audience is invited into the depths of the music from the first beat. The sound of Little North is far greater than the classic piano trio constellation suggests. In a melting pot of modern minimalism and Nordic jazz tradition, and with an intensity that draws threads to New York's jazz scene, Little North adds the next exciting chapter in the history of Scandinavian jazz. For their latest releases, the group has harvested widespread recognition, and thrilled both Danish as well as international critics.

On the upcoming album “Familiar Places”, Little North expands their already well-defined sound. The guitar's warm energy and the raw, expressive expression from the trumpet add new musical depths while the trio's strong sound runs like a red thread through the album. At “Familiar Places”, Little North presents a wide range of emotional and sonic landscapes and at the same time continues to refine their well-known Nordic sound.

Fabrizio Bosso with Jesper Bodilsen Trio

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Fabrizio Bosso (Trumpet / IT)Magnus Hjorth (Piano / DK)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Martin Andersen (Drums / DK)

Many Danish jazz musicians have international careers and excite jazz listeners all around the world. Bassist Jesper Bodilsen has been an established musician in Italy for many years, and drummer Martin Andersen almost consider Spain as his second home. The excellent Italian trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso is one of the star musicians, who plays with the two Danish musicians at concerts in Italy.

Just like his compatriot and instrument colleague, Enrico Rava, Bosso focuses on the melodic in his playing. His ability to compose the most beautiful and often surprising musical lines is breathtaking, and his tone choices and laid-back style evokes memories of a sleepy Italian village. If you close your eyes and listen to the music, you are suddenly sitting in the shade drinking a glass of local wine, while the sun calmly sets behind the mountain tops.

Mange danske jazzmusikere har internationale karrierer og begejstrer jazzlyttere verden over.

Nelle Trio

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Karolina Smietana (Vocal / PL)Stian Swensson (Guitar / DK)Radek Wosko (Drums/Percussion / PL)

Nelle Trio is a band founded by the Danish based Polish singer and songwriter, Karolina Smietana, together with guitarist Stian Swensson and drummer Radek Wosko. All of them have each been part of numerous international projects with big profiles like Lionel Loueke, Palle Mikkelborg and Tomasz Stańko. The band writes original music with elements of jazz, pop and folk, with the lyrics at the center. An unconventional instrumentation with percussion, guitar and vocal provides plenty of space for experiments, musical minimalism, and attention to detail.

In 2020, the band released their debut album "TRIBE", which reflects the different emotions associated with having to adapt to a foreign culture and find your place as an individual. Through the music, the trio therefore looks at the development of identity, linked to the experience of moving to a foreign country. The group combines their melodic compositions with musical statements on topics such as democracy, the courage to be yourself and equality in spite of different cultures and religions.

It's always exciting when the younger generation gives a take on how the American song treasure can be interpreted.

Here we can sit back, close our eyes and drift away with the English singer Claire Martin's personal and heartfelt interpretations of jazz standards, as they were introduced by Carmen McRae, Ella Fitzgerald and all the others. Martin's clean and clear voice brings the listener back to a time when it was not about showing skill, but about performing text and melody as simple and present as possible - a rarity among singers today.

Claire Martin is one of England's leading jazz singers and is also an intense and charming performer. She is accompanied here by her regular Danish trio. It is thus not a one-night-only concert; the four musicians know each other thoroughly.

Human Being Human

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Esben Tjalve (Piano / DK)Torben Bjørnskov (Bass / DK)Frederik Bülow (Drums / DK)

In Human Being Human, the musicians gather around music that explores and challenges the acoustic jazz trio. With elements of electronica, the trio's sound universe and possibilities are expanded, which normally only can be performed by much larger ensembles. The trio's compositional basis is to create musical platforms where the music can unfold with equal parts of improvisation, grooves and ambience. The music will therefore take you on a journey from cinematic landscapes to the intense chaos of the big city, and there will be equal parts of inspiration from Johan Sebastian Bach to the soul jazz of the 1970s.

Human Being Human as a trio has a lot to offer due to the musicians' very different backgrounds. Torben Bjørnskov has deep roots in Nordic melancholy, but also in jazz, thanks to a long collaboration with American and English musicians. Esben Tjalve has worked for a number of years in the London music scene, and Frederik Bülow has strong ties to the new wave of Jazz Tronica and Odd meters-based music.

The trio's music makes a strong voice in our time, and behind every single composition many cultural, philosophical and spiritual thoughts are waiting to be discovered. So come by Montmartre and join the exploration of the deep sound universe of Human Being Human.

Søren Lee (Guitar / DK)Linley Marthe (Bass / MU)Niclas Campagnol (Drums / SE)

After more than a year of a forced corona break, guitarist Søren Lee finally returns to Montmartre with his strong trio consisting of bassist Linley Marthe and drummer Niclas Campagnol. It's terrific contemporary guitar jazz, with Lee borrowing from the six-string heroes like John Scofield and Jeff Beck. Søren Lee is an insanely captivating guitarist and manages to seduce even the most skeptical anti-jazzers with his dynamic and melodic sound. The super funky bassist Linley Marthe gathers and pushes the music in a constant and hugely inspiring direction. Drummer Niclas Campagnol's eager play ensures that the pot is always kept boiling.

The three musicians have created their very own sound. In contrast to the wild energy, Søren Lee has written beautiful Nordic-sounding songs, which create a youthful and contemporary version of the guitar trio.

Trommeslager Niclas Campagnols ivrige spil sørger for at gryden altid holdes i kog.

Scott Hamilton/Jan Lundgren Quartet

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Scott Hamilton (Tenor Sax / US)Jan Lundgren (Piano / SE)Hans Backenroth (Bass / SE)Kristian Leth (Drums / DK)

Tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton is always up for a fiery solo. Few, like him, have gained inspiration from all the tenor giants, mixed it all in a large tub, and from there created their very own sound and their deeply personal musical expression. Some will find his style a bit outdated, while others - probably most - enjoy Hamilton's genuine and heartfelt grip on the best sides of classical jazz; it swings, it sounds good, and it is with guarantee an honest and genuine musical statement from a musician who has always been true to what he loves.

Listening to Scott Hamilton is like cruising around New York City in a 1958 Cadillac DeVille; 100% American and 100% honest music. These evenings he is accompanied by the magnificent trio consisting of Jan Lundgren, Hans Backenroth and Kristian Leth.
