Qarin/Siv Duo consists of the Norwegian drummer Siv Øyunn Kjenstad and Swedish singer Qarin Wikström. Qarin/Siv Duo represents a personal, warm sound and a hard-hitting expression, which creates dynamic compositions and a playful atmosphere. This duos collaboration is brand new and they are each inspired by many different styles and music genres, which results in a performance characterized by compositions consisting of short melodies, grooves and harmonic and rhythmical equivocations. At their concerts, the duo masters the use of electronics, keys, vocal and drums, which creates a mosaic sound-experience.

Toldam/Snekkestad/Bruun/Wangrenn consists of Torben Snekkestad, Peter Bruun, August Wanngren and Simon Toldam. This concert will be the debut of these skilled musicians as a new orchestra that seeks to bring the listener into an enlarged sonic universe, where even the smallest sounds are clear. The group consists of musicians who are all recognized names within the Scandinavian improv-environment. Simon Toldam composes the music for this concert, in which the musical textures act as the focal point. Toldam has won no less than 4 Danish jazz grammies, among them ”Rising Star” of the Danish music scene. Look forward to a debut-concert accompanied by some of Scandinavia’s biggest jazz-stars and a performance that presents a universe of sounds, colors and excellent music compositions.

Tyler Blanton (Vibes / US)Jon Cowherd (Piano / US)Massimo Biolcati (Bass / US)Paul Wiltgen (Drums / LU)

Jazz is rapidly developing these years. Young musicians appear regularly and show guts, talent and above all maturity. This Californian-born, now living in New York, vibe player Tyler Blanton is one of these. Thorough studies of the instrument and its possibilities and a natural ability to create music that makes sense, has rushed Blanton up among the leading vibe-players of the US. Blanton brings thought out music that seems inspired by classical American jazz as well as classical European music.

Storyville Album Releases: Romme Trio & Lundekvist Trio

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.

1. set:

Zier Romme (Piano / DK)Anders Fjeldsted (Bass / DK)Jeppe Gram (Drums / DK)

2. set:

Sven-Erik Lundekvist (Piano / SE)Simon Petersson (Bass / SE)Olle Dernevik (Drums / SE)

Danish pianist Zier Romme has been named greatest talent in many years. And well deserved it is. He has an impressive technique; his musical ideas flow like a thundering river and he respectfully follows the fine path of instrumental predecessors. Zier Romme Trio plays jazz with joy and innovation which proves that the formation piano, bass and drums still can produce great music – as long as the musicians on stage have something on their mind. Enjoy excellent music played by excellent musicians.

With Swedish Sven-Erik Lundekvist Trio we are a little further ahead in jazz history. He brings his own music, but off course has the necessary respect for the tradition. His music is aggressive and in-your-face, but don’t worry; you are not pushed away. The three musicians know what they are doing and join each other – and the audience – in a fruitful and ever commenting and supportive cooperation. New Swedish jazz with heart, soul and energy.

The Swedes are lucky! In 2014, American trumpet player Dwayne Clemons moved to Stockholm and started teaching local musicians how to play today’s version of US-jazz. ILK Sessions: Duo Campanula + Anker/Sandell Duo

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.

1. set:

Anders Banke (Saxophone / DK)Peter Danstrup (Bass / DK)

2. set:

Lotte Anker (Saxophone / DK)Sten Sandell (Piano / SE)

Duo Campanula consists of Anders Banke on saxophone and Peter Danstrup bass. The duo is named after a wild growing flower, deeply rooted in the Danish soil, yet distinctly influenced by the international music environment. This constellation, consisting of saxophone and bass guitar, investigates both the improvisational and composed music, which creates a unique music experience. Banke and Danstrup have worked together for years and get a lot of their inspiration from groups such as Reptiles and Klökkeblömst. The duo emphasizes an open and intimate approach for their compositions, which results in exciting new songs that range widely in genres.

Anker/Sandell Duo consists of Lotte Anker (saxophone) and Sten Sandell (piano). The duo has worked together on and off for 4 years, but their relation goes way back. For more than 20 years, Anker and Sandell have been a part of the same orchestras, such as Art-Out, Konvoj Ensemble and Pans Scan Ensemble. Both have a vast knowledge about, and talent within, their musical field, which results in adventurous and innovative compositions. They are both well-known artists within the European improv-stage and have worked with numerous international musicians. Sandells music is inspired by a deeply personal and explorative expression. He masters the piano as well as the organ and the clavichord. Moreover, he composes music for both radio and theatres. Likewise, Ankers musical expression is inspired by a personal and lively expression. Anker has even been the initiator of groups such as Taborn, Anker and Electic Habitat.

Charles McPherson Quartet: American Jazz Legend

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Charles McPherson (Alto Sax / US)Albert Palau (Piano / ES)Mark Hodgson (Bass / UK)Stephen Keogh (Drums / IE)

Alto player Charles McPherson’s fine sound played a leading role in Clint Eastwood’s excellent movie about the life of jazz-legend Charlie Parker, ”Bird”; providing the sound for actor Forest Whitaker’s brilliant performance as Parker. McPherson was for many years closely connected to jazz-legend Charles Mingus, and he was an often-used sideman when the authentic jazz-feeling was needed. McPherson also led own groups, always focusing on genuine and heartfelt swing – more than on a ground-breaking approach. His playing today contains the same values. Charles McPherson – now in his 80th year – still represents onrushing, physical and a devil-may-care musical expression, directly from the heart of jazz itself.

Monten: Lord Akton / Olof Melander & Terkel Nørgaard

1. set:

Lord Akton (Electronics / DK)

2. set:

Olof Melander (Electronics / SE)Terkel Nørgaard (Drums/Perc / DK)

Lord Akton Lord Akton (Jesper Koblauch) currently lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from where he mainly produces music for Danish vocalists and solo projects for the record company Psykofarmakarisma. Lord Akton has now realeased four songs and his latest, ’Spectator’ from 2017, released for the Copenhagen-based record label GSM, consists solely of music inspired by the Danish jazz legend Carsten Meinerts quartet that is known for their desired album ‘To You’, which was released in 1968. Akton has been in close contact with Carsten Meinert during the recording of ‘Spectator’ and Meinert even contributes playing the alto sax on a couple of songs. At this concert, the audience can expect a journey through Lord Aktons past, present and future with focus on bringing jazz and beats together in a beautiful fusion.

Olof Melander & Terkel Nørgaard The Swedish producer Olof Melander and the Danish jazz drummer Terkel Nørgaard comes together in an improvised project where Melander's abstract flowing electronic surfaces meets Nørgaard's explosive jazz style full of colors and beats. Olof Melander, also known as Iller the Abstract Giraffe, is a musician and producer from Malmö. He makes music that takes you on a journey, drawing inspiration from various fields such as free jazz, electronica, hip hop and dub. There’s often a feeling of peace and calmness around the music and a sense of abstraction in the rhythms, which results in some sort of organized chaos. The Danish drummer and composer Terkel Nørgaard has been noticed for his successful collaborations with some of the country's most distinguished musicians and poets, such as Palle Mikkelborg and Jørgen Leth. His curiosity for new music constantly creates new paths that challenges and amazes his audience.

ECM 50 Years: Ralph Towner

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Ralph Towner (Guitar / US)

American guitarist and pianist Ralph Towner has been a member of groundbreaking west-American acoustic groups, Paul Winter Consort and Oregon. His cooperation with e.g. Gary Burton, John Abercrombie and early Weather Report and – maybe most importantly – his many releases on the highly respected German record label ECM, has established Towners reputation as one of the absolute masters of the acoustic guitar. His playing is esoteric, focusing deeply on the timbre and constant harmonic development. His playing is never predictable, it is constantly lustful and ever satisfying. This is truly msic from a master.

Hans samarbejde med bl.a.

Only a few Danish singer/songwriters has an equal charisma and so much to offer musically as Mette Juul. We are offered Americana with a lot of jazz on board and with inspirations from the Grand Ladies of American music. Mette Juul is an excellent singer, in total control over the range and possibilities of her voice. And above all she has a sure touch as her own leading lady, she knows from where the music originated and she knows where she wants to take it. London Jazz News wrote: "Danish singer/songwriter Mette Juul is one of those artists who creep up on you and grow upon you and, as you absorb the melodies and the intriguing lyrics, suddenly you're in love with a voice”. Mette Juul is on stage accompanied by three of the finest jazz musicians in the country.

London Jazz News skriver: "Danish, singer/songwriter, Juul is one of those artists who creep up on you and grow upon you and, as you absorb the melodies and the intriguing lyrics, suddenly you're in love with a voice”. Marc Ribot Solo

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Marc Ribot (Guitar / US)

In the 1980s US-guitarist belonged to the wave of young jazz musicians who took apart jazz and put it back together in unexpected ways. His often brutal and atonal playing turned off traditionalists, but everyone agreed that he was a musician with a message and able to penetrate all prejudice. Today Marc Ribot is an icon! Not just among guitar players, but the entire jazz world hails him as an innovator and uncompromising artist. Not that he has changed his way of playing; but the history of jazz has finally caught up with him, and is now moving along the same path. Marc Ribot is member of another icon’s group, singer and songwriter Tom Waits, when he is recording and touring. Face a change in your perception of jazz and expect to receive a once-in-a-lifetime experience when Marc Ribot enters the stage.

The Aarhus based band Røgsignal has created their own sound in a world of pulsating beats and experimental soundscapes. Their songs are inspired by modern indie rock and a longing for the deserted country roads of Western Jutland.
Røgsignal has a dreamy and inexplicable sound, which is both beautiful and calming. The release of their album “Pletter På Solen” lead to them playing concerts at the biggest Danish Jazz festivals and music venues in Denmark, with great reviews and getting played in frequent rotation on the radio. Since then the band has been touring in Denmark and made two music videos. Røgsignal has also worked with Anders Boll from the band Efterklang and their releases has been described as fusion jazz incorporating different sounds and influences from Denmark and the wider world of music.

Benjamin Koppel/Scott Colley

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Benjamin Koppel (Alto Sax / DK)Scott Colley (Bass / US)

The art of jazz is based on communication and dialogue between the musicians and the audience. Very few master this art form and communication better than American bass player Scott Colley and Danish alto sax player Benjamin Koppel. They have worked together for more than 10 years and are able to light the fire and keep it going throughout an entire concert. Remarkably intense, powerful and highly inspiring music from two musicians, who masters the interplay and the mutual inspiration to maximum extend.

Alvin Queen (Drums / US)Jesse Davis (Alto Sax / US)Danny Grissett (Piano / US)Dezron Douglas (Bass / US)

American drummer Alvin Queen have a close relationship with Denmark. He was member of Danish icon Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen’s trio for many years, and is a regular guest here. One of the last occasions was at Danish Music Awards Jazz in 2017, where he, with pianist Zier Romme and bass player Ida Hviid, played an enchanted concert, which proved that trio jazz of today definitely not is a sorry excuse for itself! With his constantly swinging and attentive playing, Alvin Queen is a drummer who in the finest way passes on the Afro American playing. Meet Alvin Queen with his group, consisting of musicians who share his musical focus - highly satisfying!

Seamus Blake (Tenor Sax / UK)Hayden Powell (Trumpet / UK)Espen Berg (Piano / NO)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Anders Thorén (Drums / NO)

From England, via Canada and New York now living in Paris – here is one of the best tenor sax players of today; Seamus Blake. He played with almost everyone over the years, and has created his own style; cleaning up in the phrases, and only playing the ones that make sense. Seamus Blake’s playing on the tenor sax and the electronical EWI is highly satisfying – whatever genre you as a listener may prefer. Constantly melodically perfect, raunching if necessary and intense when needed. Here you can enjoy Seamus Blake with a group who is more than capable of laying out the fine blanket under his playing and providing him with the best possible backing.

Danish Jazz Federation invited American pianist Aaron Parks to Denmark for one month in 2013, to inspire, perform with and generally join the Danish jazz scene. During his stay, he made many new friends among musicians and – especially among the attentive jazz audience. Parks has returned many times and is a treasured guest on the piano benches all over our country. His highly emotional and attentive playing may remind you of the great ones (Jarrett, Evans et al), but Aaron Parks is quite unique. He could be one of the great ones himself in the years to come. Please greet Aaron Parks with his steady US-group that delivers his musical ideas in the finest way.

Saxophone player, composer and bandleader Pernille Bévort is and has always been a unique person on the Danish jazz scene. She does not follow the trends of today. She sets her own marks and stands proudly for her musical conviction. At this event, Bévort brings an impressing team of musicians that conveys her musical ideas. Bévort is inspired by music from everywhere, but we constantly sense a clear and distinct direction; beautiful sonic timbres, exciting rhythmic and melodic progress and – above all – excellent solos. Radio Bévort is challenging music that crawls under your skin and fills out your entire body. The Danish jazz magazine Jazz Special said this about Radio Bévort’s last CD release: “It has been a great while since I heard contemporary music that has caught me like this – physically as well as intellectually.”

Christina Dahl (Tenor Sax / DK)Marie Schmidt (Piano / DK)Helle Marstrand (Bass / DK)Benita Haastrup (Drums/Perc / DK)

Jazz does not have to be difficult to be hip. This trio is the best proof of that. Meet three musicians, whose approach to music is honest, right there and whose joy in talking directly to you, can only bring you joy – no matter what music you hold high. The interplay, the spirit and the passion is obvious from first note to the last. The trio plays own tunes and standards with conviction and an energy that really pleases the listener. Sophisticated Ladies is jazz for those who do not yet know they like jazz – and off course for us who do.

When Malene Kjærgård takes the stage, she enriches her audience. Her melodies are catchy, and her lyrics display her unique flair for the linguistic peculiarities. Malene Kjærgård is blessed with a soft, beautiful voice and her talent is indisputable. Durable melodies, sweet phrasings and a clear sound are the keywords when Kjærgård pampers her audience, and anyone who listens will experience the intimate room that she can create. This evening she is accompanied by a team of fresh and energetic guys who will take the concert to higher altitudes. Where the experience is greatest. In other words, you really have something to look forward to in the company of Malene Kjærgård, Calle Brickman, Mads Kjølby, Tobias Dall and Snorre Kirk.

Tribute to NHØP

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Bo Stief (Bass / DK)Hans Ulrik (Tenor Sax / DK)Henrik Gunde (Piano / DK)Alex Riel (Drums / DK)

National Danish acoustic bass-icon Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (NHØP) left our world way too soon in 2005. This evening four musicians show their deep respect and pay their homage to this great innovator. Bo Stief has been a close ear and eyewitness to NHØP's life, mainly because the two friends had large parts of their musical upbringing at Montmartre. Stief talks about his experiences with NHØP, and the music played will be related to these stories. Stief will be accompanied by three great Danish musicians; Hans Ulrik (sax), Henrik Gunde (piano) and the drummer, who has been touring endlessly with NHØP, Alex Riel.

The group enters NHØP’s musical universe and gives us their 2019-interpretations of his musical output. We will witness a glorious journey in music, where US-jazz walks hand in hand with traditional Danish songs. And through the entire concert, the spirit of NHØP and his enormous position in Danish jazz will be present.

Danmarks nationale jazz-ikon, bassisten Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen forlod alt for tidligt vores verden i 2005.

Jonas Johansen: Blanco y Negro

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Jonas Johansen (Drums / DK)Karl-Martin Almqvist (Tenor Sax / SE)Abel Marcel (Piano / CU)Yasser Morejón Pino (Bass / CU)Eliel Lazo (Perc/Vocals / CU)

Cubans sees this band as a jazz group. Danes regards the music as Cuban musi This is how different music can be conceived, especially when it’s combining multiple traditions. However, Danish drummer Jonas Johansen has gathered an impressive bunch of musicians, and together they have created exquisite and original music, that melts afro/Cuban, American and Scandinavian music into an impressive and complete musical expression. Enjoy pianist Abel Marcel’s to-the-edge solos, powerful and emotional conga playing from Eliel Lazo, intense and swinging bass playing from Yasser Morejón, juicy solos from Swedish tenor player Karl-Martin Almqvist, and last, but not least unifying drumming from bandleader Jonas Johansen.

John Marshall (Trumpet / US)Calle Brickman (Piano / SE)Ida Hvid (Bass / DK)Egor Kryukovskikh (Drums / RU)

Raw, aggressive, but also deeply felt and intense trumpet playing from a musician, who for years has embellished trumpet sections in various European big bands, but who now wants to defend his position as an important performer with focus on neo-bop and what followed. John Marshall’s beautiful sound and strong power in luring out all possible details of the musical finesses of the compositions, are an important reason for visiting Montmartre this (hopefully) warm night in June. Hearing the fine trio behind Marshall could be another reason. Whatever the choices, you will not leave without gaining a fine musical experience.

Ronnie Cuber Band

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Ronnie Cuber (Bariton Sax / US)Mads Vinding (Bass / DK)Nikolaj Bentzon (Keys / DK)Andreas Svendsen (Drums / DK)

A star doesn’t necessarily lose its shine even though it has been glowing on the international jazz scene since 1959. Baryton saxplayer Ronnie Cuber is the finest proof hereof. Here we have a musician who could not care less about creating “fine art”. Instead, Cuber finds all the good stuff in the soul of jazz and puts it out there the way, he wants it to sound. His sound is straight, honest and smack-in-your-face, which puts a happy smile on the audience’s faces. Hear him with Danish musicians, who know how to accompany a musician of this high caliber: Straight on!
