Tribute to NHØP

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Bo Stief (Bass / DK)Hans Ulrik (Tenor Sax / DK)Henrik Gunde (Piano / DK)Alex Riel (Drums / DK)

National Danish acoustic bass-icon Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (NHØP) left our world way too soon in 2005. This evening four musicians show their deep respect and pay their homage to this great innovator. Bo Stief has been a close ear and eyewitness to NHØP's life, mainly because the two friends had large parts of their musical upbringing at Montmartre. Stief talks about his experiences with NHØP, and the music played will be related to these stories. Stief will be accompanied by three great Danish musicians; Hans Ulrik (sax), Henrik Gunde (piano) and the drummer, who has been touring endlessly with NHØP, Alex Riel.

The group enters NHØP’s musical universe and gives us their 2019-interpretations of his musical output. We will witness a glorious journey in music, where US-jazz walks hand in hand with traditional Danish songs. And through the entire concert, the spirit of NHØP and his enormous position in Danish jazz will be present.

Danmarks nationale jazz-ikon, bassisten Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen forlod alt for tidligt vores verden i 2005.

Sylfide / Folk at Montmartre

Helene Tungelund (Vocal/Celtic Harp / DK)Jonathan Fjord (Keys / DK)Emil Nielsen (Bass / DK)Jonas Clausen (Violin / DK)

Based on the Nordic folk music’s calmness and homeliness, and with a sensitivity that tries to contain our modern chaotic world, Sylfide examines what place folk music has in today’s society. The quartet borrows from the Nordic folk music’s simple, modal idioms and adds danceable everyday-poetry, whilst proximity and honesty is the focal point always. The repertoire consists of both newly written melodies and songs, and interpretations of Nordic danceable melodies with added lyrics. Sylfide tries, with a mix of acoustic and electric instruments, to give their interpretation of how folk music, songwriting and aspheric soundscapes can be united in the Nordic music tradition.

Jonas Johansen: Blanco y Negro

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Jonas Johansen (Drums / DK)Karl-Martin Almqvist (Tenor Sax / SE)Abel Marcel (Piano / CU)Yasser Morejón Pino (Bass / CU)Eliel Lazo (Perc/Vocals / CU)

Cubans sees this band as a jazz group. Danes regards the music as Cuban musi This is how different music can be conceived, especially when it’s combining multiple traditions. However, Danish drummer Jonas Johansen has gathered an impressive bunch of musicians, and together they have created exquisite and original music, that melts afro/Cuban, American and Scandinavian music into an impressive and complete musical expression. Enjoy pianist Abel Marcel’s to-the-edge solos, powerful and emotional conga playing from Eliel Lazo, intense and swinging bass playing from Yasser Morejón, juicy solos from Swedish tenor player Karl-Martin Almqvist, and last, but not least unifying drumming from bandleader Jonas Johansen.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Malene Mortensen (Vocal / DK)Ole Kock Hansen (Piano / DK)Anders Fjeldsted (Bass / DK)Andreas Svendsen (Drums / DK)

Singer Malene Mortensen is one of the greatest vocal-talents in Denmark - and has been for many years. She has done her time in the commercial field, but is now back in the jazz-world and thank God for that! Mortensen has played with young Danish musicians, worked as soloist with big bands, performed and recorded with top US-musicians, and now she is here with a repertoire, solely consisting of some of the most wonderful songs ever written in Denmark. Composer Kai Normann Andersen put a spell on our nation when he wrote these wonderful songs. Songs that everyone in Denmark knows and can hum along with. Mortensen is backed by master pianist Ole Kock Hansen, fine bass player Anders Fjeldsted and discrete drummer Andreas Svendsen; three musicans that will wrap Malene Mortensen in the softest velvet, and offer you music that will bring a smile to your face and maybe a tear to your eyes.

Photo: Eric Klitgaard

North / Upcoming at Montmartre

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Benjamin Nørholm Jacobsen (Piano / DK)Martin Brunbjerg Rasmussen (Bass / DK)Lasse Jacobsen (Drums / DK)

Drawing inspiration from modern minimalism and with the roots firmly planted in the Nordic jazz tradition, "North" takes the listener on a journey to a world of cinematic evocative compositions. The music is lyrical and melodic and exists in the borderlands between composition and improvisation. Between the simple and the complex. With profound interplay and a strongly image-creating character, the foundation is laid for a musical experience of the highest caliber.

For students/under 26, tickets: 50 DKK

John Marshall (Trumpet / US)Calle Brickman (Piano / SE)Ida Hvid (Bass / DK)Egor Kryukovskikh (Drums / RU)

Raw, aggressive, but also deeply felt and intense trumpet playing from a musician, who for years has embellished trumpet sections in various European big bands, but who now wants to defend his position as an important performer with focus on neo-bop and what followed. John Marshall’s beautiful sound and strong power in luring out all possible details of the musical finesses of the compositions, are an important reason for visiting Montmartre this (hopefully) warm night in June. Hearing the fine trio behind Marshall could be another reason. Whatever the choices, you will not leave without gaining a fine musical experience.

Silhouette: A Tribute to Lars Gullin

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Christina Von Bülow (Alto Sax / DK)Fredrik Lundin (Baryton Sax / DK)Jacob Fisher (Guitar / DK)Daniel Franck (Bass / SE)Jeppe Gram (Drums / DK)

Alto sax player Christina von Bülow and baritone sax player Fredrik Lundin are both fascinated by the late Swedish baritone sax player Lars Gullin's emotional and melancholic playing. The two of them decided to form a group, with Gullin's eternally present and beautiful music as the main part of the repertoire, supplemented with original compositions. This is a beautiful corner of Scandinavian jazz, this is where great emotions are presented, and no one leaves the concert without being touched by this music.

It is always a joy when a young musician decides to focus on passing on a strong jazz-tradition. Guitarist Jacob Artved lives in the tradition, but has definitely obtained inspirations from guitar players of today. His playing is skilled and honest, and he has a fine career ahead of him. These three days Artved is heard with no other than a legend; the American drummer Louis Hayes, whose strong playing was the driving force in groups led by Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver and Woody Shaw. What a scoop! The group is completed by two incredible musicians from NYC; pianist Jeb Patton and bassist David Wong.

Ronnie Cuber (Bariton Sax / US)Mads Vinding (Bass / DK)Nikolaj Bentzon (Keys / DK)Andreas Svendsen (Drums / DK)

A star doesn’t necessarily lose its shine even though it has been glowing on the international jazz scene since 1959. Baryton saxplayer Ronnie Cuber is the finest proof hereof. Here we have a musician who could not care less about creating “fine art”. Instead, Cuber finds all the good stuff in the soul of jazz and puts it out there the way, he wants it to sound. His sound is straight, honest and smack-in-your-face, which puts a happy smile on the audience’s faces. Hear him with Danish musicians, who know how to accompany a musician of this high caliber: Straight on!

Scott Hamilton/Jan Lundgren Quartet ft. Ulf Wakenius

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Scott Hamilton (Tenor Sax / US)Jan Lundgren (Piano / SE)Ulf Wakenius (Guitar / SE)Hans Backenroth (Bass / SE)Kristian Leth (Drums / DK)

This is music for the sweet tooth. If you are a sucker for the good melodies, tastefully played by world class musicians, this is the concert for you. The repertoire is picked from the rich treasure-box of popular songs from the 20th century’s Denmark. Songs that we all know and that is part of our cultural inheritance. You will also hear music, closely connected to US-musicians like Stan Getz and Oscar Pettiford, who lived in Copenhagen way back in the late 50s, but whose legacy is still present. This all-star group is led by the American tenor saxophone player Scott Hamilton, who is a master at conveying beautiful melodies. Complimented by the Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren’s personal style and sublime phrasing, which is very close to fellow countryman and Swedish jazz-icon Jan Johansson’s, and the Swedish super-guitarist Ulf Wakenius, whose melodic and technically perfect string work is known from his years with Oscar Peterson and Danish bass-icon Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. The rhythm-team consist of the experienced and swinging Swedish bassist Hans Backenroth and the versatile Danish drummer Kristian Leth. These concerts mark the release of Hamilton’s new album “Danish Ballads & more”.

The five band members of Girls in Airports got together in 2009 and since then they have been expanding their sound universe with new musical inspiration from modern jazz, global folklore, minimalism, synthesizer music and an atmospheric sound. The critics have compared the band to names such as Brian Eno, Radiohead, King Crimson, Jon Hassell, Sun Ra and Jan Garbarek. “Girls in Airports performed a very fascinating and special demonstration while exploring the unbound and unfamiliar” - Politiken.

The concept ”Monten” presents musicians who are not afraid to exceed the limits of genres by merging them and creating new musical expressions. Genres such as soul, hiphop, folk and electronic music will be weaved together when the borders of jazz are explored.
