Good bass players are not in short supply on the Danish Jazz scene. But only a few master and express themselves with the same authority as Niels Wilhelm Knudsen does with a bass. After more than a quarter of a century in different musical contexts, there should be no doubt about the talent that Niels Wilhelm Knudsen possesses, both as a composer and instrumentalist. Three CDs and a fourth LP just around the corner make up an extensive backlist of great tones and wonderful swing sensations, not often heard in today’s younger acoustic jazz. Niels Wilhelm Knudsen’s new quartet with tenor Thomas Hass, pianist Kathrine Windfeld and drummer Michael Dalgas have every opportunity to raise awareness and on this evening, they do so with a celebration of the release of their new LP at Unicorn Jazz’ final concert after nearly 40 year’s activity.

The concerts is presented in collaboration with UNICORN. Ticket price is DKK 100. Only sold at the door.

Billetpris 100 kr. Sælges kun i døren.

Jakob Sørensen (Trumpet / DK)Alex Jønsson (Guitar / DK)Mathias Jæger (Piano / DK)Frederik Sakham (Bass / DK)Frej Lesner (Drums / DK)

Bagland is a quintet consisting of five musicians, who all have their roots based in the Scandinavian sound. The music is inspired by the deserted and open nordic landscape. Lyrical and melancholic melodies characterize the compositions and the sound is clean and fragile with obvious references to the Nordic sound. Their debut album has been praised by critics and the follow up was a big part of Jakob winning the DPA Award “Jazz Artist of the Year”, 2017.

Tickets only available at the door. Tickets is DKK 100 each and only DKK 50 for students/under 26.

Tribute to NHØP

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Hans Ulrik (Tenor Sax / DK)Alex Riel (Drums / DK)Bo Stief (Bass / DK)Henrik Gunde (Piano / DK)

This evening is dedicated to Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, where four of Denmark's best jazz musicians have joined forces to play music in his spirit. Alex Riel played with NHØP throughout his career and together they were called "The Great Danes". Now, Riel and Bo Stief celebrate their good friend and colleague together with the two younger musicians, Hans Ulrik and Henrik Gunde, who in their own way carry the musical legacy of NHØP. Besides being a jazz experience at its best, this evening creates a room for anecdotes about NHØP who took everybody by storm with his formidable technique when he unconditionally stood in the service of music.

The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Ellen Andersson Quartet

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Ellen Andersson (Vocal / SE)Anton Forsberg (Guitar / SE)Hannes Jonsson (Bass / SE)Sebastian Brydniak (Drums / SE)

Ellen Andersson has one of the most distinctive voices in Swedish jazz right now and with her quartet, there is no doubt that she visits Montmartre in great shape. When the group debuted with the album “I'll Be Seeing You” in 2016, the Swedish and Danish jazz press could not get their hands down. The very young singer and her outstanding group members, Anton Forsberg on guitar, Hannes Jonsson on bass and Sebastian Brydniak on drums, are already deeply rooted in the American standard jazz tradition with traces of both Billie Holiday and Nancy Wilson. This evening you will experience Anderson’s ability to do both storytelling and improvisation when a delicate interaction between the members plays out.

Foto: Satu Knape

Peter Asplund (Trumpet / SE)Jacob Christoffersen (Piano / DK)Hans Andersson (Bass / SE)Johan Löfcrantz Ramsay (Drums / SE)

Peter Asplund is one of Sweden's most significant trumpet players with his timeless and personal style of expression. It is Asplund's philosophy that development comes with hard work. If you want to be an artist you also need to be a craftsman. The one gives birth to the other and it must be said, that Asplund masters both art and craft. In addition to being a great trumpet player, he also has an excellent vocal, which can be heard on the album “Aspiration” from 2015. This evening he can be experienced with his firm quartet consisting of Danish Jacob Christoffersen on piano, Swedish Hans Andersson on bass and Swedish Johan Löfcrantz Ramsay on drums.

Photo: Jan Perneros

The American legend, Lee Konitz, is one of the most significant jazz saxophonists, one of the last remaining giants, and at the age of 90 he still excels. During Konitz's long career, he has performed successfully in a wide range of styles, including bebop, cool jazz, and avant-garde jazz. His name is strongly associated with the cool jazz movement and includes participation in Miles Davis’s “Birth of the Cool”. Konitz has received the prestigious Jazzpar Prize in 1992 for his lifelong work. Do not miss out on three historical evenings at Montmartre when Konitz visits Montmartre with Florian Weber on piano, Michel Benita on bass and Israel Verala on drums.

Trio Gemini/Lohse Ensemble - Gratis Entre

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.

As something quite special, Montmartre presents a collaboration between the young German composer Jan Flessel and one of the country's most recognized and sought after piano trio Trio Gemini. Jan Flessel is part of a new generation of conceptual-media composers. He has inspired the trio to think progressively and lead the concept "piano trio" a new place by, among other things, to integrate electronics and video. The trio performs the work Piano Trio No. 2, which explores the concept of "play" by integrating a fourth player who plays computer after instruction from the score and uses the computer game as an instrument. In addition, the concert offers the newly launched Lohse Ensemble, a piano quartet that specializes in music written by Danish composer Martin Lohse. Furthermore, the talented bassist Mathæus Bech shows new sounds and techniques on the double bass in an amazing solo work by Italian composer Luciano Berio.

Six City Stompers is perhaps the most successful young jazz band in Scandinavian. The sextet was formed by their common love of Louis Armstrong and their contribution to the traditional jazz scene is like a refreshing summer breeze. Six City Stompers excel within the traditional New Orleans jazz and the energy and feeling immediately pull you back to the early 1920s where names like King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet were roaming the clubs. This evening it’s the new generation who will be the focus, and the glow and joy from this ensemble is easy to hear. Six City Stompers play with enthusiasm, both from the book of good old evergreens and their own originals, and we couldn’t think of a better way to start Copenhagen Jazz Festival.

Martin Wind Quartet

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Martin Wind (Bass / DE)Scott Robinson (Tenor Sax / US)Bill Cunliffe (Piano / US)Joe La Barbera (Drums / US)

After establishing himself as a sideman and educator for most of his first decade in New York Martin Wind is proud to present his working band featuring the talents of Scott Robinson, Bill Cunliffe and Joe La Barbera. “…a sumptuous treat”, “…a seamless combination of swinging ensemble and lush orchestration work.” And downright “disgustingly beautiful” are some of the words tied to the Quartet. Martin Wind Quartet plays originals that partly result from the leader’s studies with Kenny Werner, Mike Holober and Jim McNeely. The band’s repertoire also includes classics such as Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday”, Billy Strayhorn’s “Isfahan”, and Thelonious Monk’s “Bright Mississippi”. The band’s motto has always been “anything goes” – so it’s safe to say that we can expect everything from Martin Wind Quartet at Jazzhus Montmartre.

New York based Kirk Knuffke has slowly but surely evolved into one of the most exciting and creative cornet players on the jazz scene, and finally, Thommy Andersson who has been writing compositions and played with international format for several years. The music will be given safe conduct this evening and will move in every possible direction without warning.

Bekkas/Kajfeš/Nordenström/Pasborg: Magic Spirit Quartet

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Majid Bekkas (Guimbre/Vocal / MA)Stefan Pasborg (Drums / DK)Goran Kajfeš (Trumpet / SE)Jesper Nordenström (Piano / Rhodes / SE)

It’s going to be super interesting when the Moroccan guembre player and vocalist, Majid Bekkas, will perform together with two of Sweden’s most recognized jazz musicians Goran Kajfeš and Jesper Nordenström and the Danish jazz giant Stefan Pasborg. Even though Majid Bekkas knows his guembre to the fullest, he also has a classical music upbringing and is a professor at the music conservatory in the Moroccan capital, Rabat. Trumpeter Goran Kajfeš draws influences from many different corners of the jazz genre, which can be heard through his African and Middle Eastern inspirations combined with his take on futuristic jazz and classical minimalism. His album “X/Y” was hailed by The Independent as jazz album of the year in 2011. Jesper Nordenström is a true master of the keys and Stefan Pasborg is one of the most acclaimed drummers in Denmark. The meeting between these four musicians is a unique chance to experience an unorthodox constellation and an experience that will surprise you.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2018.
