Jan Lundgren with strings: Tribute to Jan Johansson

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Jan Lundgren (Piano / SE)Mattias Svensson (Bass / SE)Joanna Lewis (Violin / AU)Emily Stewart (Violin / UK)Aurore Cany (Viola / FR)Asja Valcic (Cello)Ronnie Gardiner (Drums / US)

WINTERJAZZ

The Swedish jazz pianist and artistic director of Montmartre has an ability to play with an outstanding poetic sensibility which is exceptionally moving to listen to. He carries on the legacy of the amazing pianist Jan Johansson with great diligence and curiosity. The tribute concerts are primarily based on the albums “Jazz på Svenska”, “Jazz på Ryska” and Jazz på Ungerska”. Lundgren puts his personal mark on the music while keeping Johanssons harmonies intact. The string quartet and Mattias Svensson, who has also been a part of Jan Lundgren Trio, adds something unique as well. Also, a special guest will join for these three concerts: the legendary drummer Ronnie Gardiner who lived in Copenhagen and played at Montmartre in 1962-63. He played with Dexter Gordon, Albert Ayler, Don Byas, Kenny Drew, Roland Kirk, Atli Bjørn and many others.

VINTERJAZZ

Arethe Franklin, David Sanborn and Paul Simon, and touring with Steely Dan and Blood, Sweat & Tears. Back in Sweden he began writing music for kids. Tonight we wil enjoy Wadenius with two of Scandinavia’s absolute top musicians in a strong blend of funk, melodic fusion with a touch of jazz and blues. Wadenius’ playing contains all the nuances it requires to satisfy any listener, great technique, poetry, god taste and off course energy.

VINTERJAZZ

Vincent Herring & the Soul Chemistry feat. Mike Le Donne

Vincent Herring (Alto Sax / US)Mike Le Donne (Piano / US)Essiet Essiet (Bass / US)Joris Dudli (Drums / CH)

WINTERJAZZ

American alto saxophone player Vincent Herring proudly carries the torch that was lit in the 1950s and was focusing on acoustic jazz with a strong and physical approach – just like today. Herring was an apprentice with greats like Cedar Walton, Art Blakey, Horace Silver and others, and obtained here the energy and knowledge of the music that helped him put together and lead own groups with more than fifteen releases in his own name. Vincent Herring is an expressive and versatile musician, carries a big and beautiful tone and whose playing is still developing and who has a big knowledge and great respect for the history of the music.

VINTERJAZZ

2. set:

Mark Solborg (Guitar / DK)Francesco Bigoni (Saxophone/Electronics / IT)Thomas Lehn (Analogue synthesizer / DE)

The pianist Søren Nørbo and the bassist and cellist Nils Bo Davidsen’s collaboration spans several decades and with a handful of common CD albums. Between each meeting, their individual persistent work with all-time music and exploration of music in other contexts leads them on new paths, and most recently, it has been Nils' cello, which has given the duo’s sound a new direction. Improvisation is the headline, both in the interpretation of Søren Nørbo's new compositions and in relation to the unpredictable musical journeys the duo invites the audience to join.

The master of analogue synth, Thomas Lehn, has since the early 1990s performed and produced live electronic music. He has formed an individual language of electronic music, which is rooted in his experience with a wide spectrum of musical fields based on his background as an interpreting and improvising pianist in classical-, contemporary and jazz music. Francesco Bigoni has been active on the Italian scene since his early twenties, before relocating to Copenhagen in 2009. He pursues sound from all sides: he holds a degree in electrical engineering and is active in the field of electroacoustics and interaction design. Mark Solborg has made an impression with 19 international releases. He has collaborated with artists like Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Herb Robertson a.o. He continues to work with intriguing musical universes, both live and in the studio.

ECM 50 Years: Craig Taborn

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Craig Taborn (Piano)

WINTERJAZZ

American pianist Craig Taborn belongs to the absolute elite within NU-jazz in the US. NU-jazz being jazz inspired by everything that is not jazz! Especially European classical music and the vigorous pianistic excesses from the 20th century is high on the list of inspirations, and Craig Taborn is one of the leading in that genre. His eminent control of the endless possibilities of the piano and an unending fantasy, combined with a gorgeous swing, makes him one of the today’s most interesting pianists. His music demands 100% attention and challenges the listener in its almost deliberate held back energy! Uncompromised music with a strong and almost political statement.

Photo: Rue Sakayama

VINTERJAZZ

John Scofield Solo

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
John Scofield (Guitar / US)

WINTERJAZZ

One of the greatest innovators of modern jazz guitar and a three-time Grammy award-winning artist, John Scofield, is returning to Montmartre. This time solo!

We’ll let Scofield present the idea behind his solo concerts: “My main focus in guitar playing has always centered around being part of a group; exploring the music that happens when musicians listen to each other and improvise together. Quite frankly, until now, I’ve avoided playing solo concerts and have done only one solo performance in public since I was a child. I hadn't considered solo guitar as the perfect platform for improvising. Now, after playing guitar for 56 years, I’m finally interested in going it alone and exploring the possibilities. It's taken me decades to realize that I’ve been playing unaccompanied guitar at home or in hotel rooms every day since 1962! I’ve put a lot of thought in lately to how I can present an evening of solo guitar that represents my passions and sensibilities. My idea is to keep it song based, playing jazz, country and rock tunes that I love as well as some of my original compositions. I've been preparing for nearly a year, working my brain in new directions while looking forward to these shows with excitement and a small bit of trepidation. I hope you enjoy being on this journey with me.”

VINTERJAZZ

Denne gang solo!

Thomas Fonnesbæk (Bass / DK)Justin Kauflin (Piano / US)Billy Williams (Drums / US)

WINTERJAZZ

CD-release Synesthesia in 2017 by US-pianist Justin Kauflin and Danish bass player Thomas Fonnesbæk established this duo as one of the finest of today. Not only are both musicians virtuosos on their respective instruments; they are also capable of painting the finest and most beautiful sound paintings in the minds of the listener when playing in duo. Live, they go a bit further out than on the recording. Kauflin and Fonnesbæk challenge and play with the music and each other like two elegant cats, but always manage to land on their feet again. Repertoire is standards as well as originals, in own and often surprising arrangements; charming, compassionate and played with a wonderful lightness.

VINTERJAZZ

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Asja Valcic (Cello)Klaus Paier (Accordion)

WINTERJAZZ

The combination accordion and cello is rarely heard. Here is the possibility to enjoy two leading instrumentalists in a close, intense and challenging interplay. Classical Masters like Bach and Stravinsky as well as Dave Brubeck, a master in Jazz, provides the material and the music is played with joy, originality and compassion by two young musicians with a big wish to make the music take off. And when the music swings like this, this concert may well be an eye-, and ear opener for members of the classical as well as the jazz clan.

VINTERJAZZ

Rigmor Gustafsson (Vocal / SE)Jonas Östholm (Piano / SE)Martin Höper (Bass / SE)Chris Montgomery (Drums / SE)

WINTERJAZZ

If Swedish Jazz singers often seem a little more controlled than their Danish colleagues, Rigmor Gustafsson is one of the few who does not hold back, but really gets into the music. Gustafssons starting point can be described as “Jazz and whatever comes next…”, and from here she is inspired by great ladies like Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, from songwriters like Burt Bacharach and from swinging Big City Blues. Her warm voice and excellent and flawless phrasing is 100 % pleasure to listen to. Rigmor Gustafsson could easily be the one taking over from legendary Swedish jazz singer Monica Zetterlund.

VINTERJAZZ

Yussef Dayes

Yussef Dayes (Drums / UK)Line-up (TBA)

The percussionist Yussef Dayes is one of the fast advancing musicians who define the direction for the new vibrant jazz scene in London. Dayes manages to produce an almost inconceivable sound from his drum kit, and plays with a rare intensity and precision. If the genre jazz, as some say, really are heading for a new golden age, Dayes is undoubtedly part of this movement. Recently, he recorded a fiery one-take live edition of his song "Love Is the Message" in the legendary study Abbey Road. The recording proves that we have two energetic, sensitive, groovy and atmospheric concerts awaiting. What a great way to finish this year’s national Vinterjazz Festival!

Ticket sales starts 16/12 at 12:00

1. set:

Laura Toxværd (Alto Sax / DK)Cæcilie Trier (Cello / DK)

2. set:

Jakob Davidsen (Piano / DK)Jesper Egelund (Bass / DK)Thomas Strønen (Drums / NO)

A new musical meeting between Laura Toxværd on alto sax and Cæcilie Trier on cello. Laura Toxværd’s original compositions written for this special occasion will be the point of departure for the duo’s sonic explorations. After a tour in New York and Chicago, where Toxværd’s graphic notated compositions were performed, Chicago Reader wrote: “She’s embraced her own form of graphic scoring - marked by variable uses of color, shape, written instructions, and conventional notation”. Cæcilie Trier is part of the Danish band Choir of Young Believers who has received gold for their album “This Is for the White in Your Eyes”. Trier explores corners of string player music and tries to look at classic music with new eyes.

Silence Trio 3 is the third trio in Jakob Davidsen’s “Silence Trio Series”, which is made in three releases with three different trios during three years. The three releases have peacefulness, precision and freedom of genre in common. They can be seen as both an assembled work or as three isolated statements. Pianist and composer Jakob Davidsen is a part of all three releases. Besides from him the works are enriched by people from both the classic and rhythmical scene. Silence Trio 3 consists of Jakob Davidsen, the Danish bass player Jesper Egelund, who is known for being a member of Figura Ensemble and the Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen, who at the moment is breaking through on the international stage with his band Time is a Blind Guide.

She’s embraced her own form of graphic scoring - marked by variable uses of color, shape, written instructions, and conventional notation”. Cæcilie Trier er en del af det danske band Choir of Young Believers, som bl.a. har modtaget guld for sit album “This Is for the White in Your Eyes”.

Time is a Blind Guide”.

Marilyn Mazur Group

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Marilyn Mazur (Drums/Percussion/Vocal / DK)Fredrik Lundin (Sax/Flute / DK)Krister Jonsson (Guitar / SE)Klavs Hovman (Bass / DK)

Marilyn Mazur has in recent years concentrated on her own original music and today unites compositions with concerts around the world with her different groups. In Marilyn Mazur Group she has gathered some of her closest musical friends: the energetic Swedish guitarist Krister Jonsson, who in recent years has been one of Marilyn's favorites, Klavs Hovman - her bass partner for more than 35 years, collecting the group with his secure groove, and Fredrik Lundin, one of Denmark's most stylish, distinctive and creative saxophonists, who recently held his 30th anniversary as an active player in the Scandinavian jazz scene. Marilyn Mazur plays poetic and multicolored groove-based music full of energetic and dramatic playing. She enjoys when the music changes between being telepathically sensitive and extremely powerful, and behind her percussions she weaves beautiful sounds and mysterious melodies. This is intense, present and melodic music, where communication and momentary inspiration are crucial to the direction of music.

Geoffrey Keezer Trio feat. Gillian Margot

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Geoffrey Keezer (Piano / US)Richie Goods (Bass / US)Jon Wikan (Drums / US)Gillian Margot (Vocal / CA)

American pianist Geoffrey Keezer arrives in Montmartre with great honors in his luggage. At 18 he already played piano with drummer-legend Art Blakey – and that requires skills to the max! Keezer received many GRAMMY-nominations, he composed music to films and tv-series, and is a well-respected musician back home in the US. We will meet Geoffrey Keezer with his own group, featuring young singer Gillian Margot, whose voice and charisma opens doors to a brilliant career in jazz, pop and/or musical. Fusion/rock-legend Sting says the following about Geoffrey Keezer: “In the universe of piano players that I have been ex-posed to over the years, Geoffrey has proved himself to be not only a superb technician and improviser, but also above and beyond this, a composer and conceptualist who can maintain the overall line and the DNA of the song in everything he plays. A musician’s musician.”

Selveste Sting udtaler bl.a. dette om Geoffrey Keezer: “In the universe of piano players that I have been ex-posed to over the years, Geoffrey has proved himself to be not only a superb technician and improviser, but also above and beyond this, a composer and conceptualist who can maintain the overall line and the DNA of the song in everything he plays. Lars Jansson Trio

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Lars Jansson (Piano / SE)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Paul Svanberg (Drums / SE)

Swedish pianist Lars Jansson is one of the leading pianist on the glittering Swedish jazz-sky. His long history in all corners of Swedish jazz – from latin/afro-fusion in the groundbreaking group EGBA, to own groups of variable sizes to backing international artists – Jansson knows about the history of jazz, and he often adds a pinch of the special Swedish melancholia. The great thing about Jansson’s version of jazz is his superior, expressive and always positive approach to music. On this occasion, he will be on stage with Danish bass-icon Jesper Bodilsen and his son, drummer Poul Svanberg, who will add his attentive playing. Expect piano-trio art on a very high level.
