Black Art Jazz Collective

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Wayne Escoffery (Tenor Sax / US)Jeremy Pelt (Trumpet / US)James Burton (Trombone / US)Danny Grissett (Piano / US)Vincente Archer (Bass / US)Johnathan Blake (Drums / US)

Formed by a cross-section of contemporary jazz's leading voices, the Black Art Jazz Collective has a simple goal as political as it is salutary: create a platform for artists of the same generation to collaborate musically and promote the recognition of Afro-American cultural and political figures. BAJC debuted in 2013 at Jazz at Lincoln Center and is dedicated to celebrating African-American cultural and political icons, as well as preserving the historical significance of African Americans in Jazz. The band's debut recording received 4.5 stars in the October, 2016 issue if Downbeat Magazine and ever since they have been touring the US and Europe in support of that recording. We cannot wait to welcome BAJC to Jazzhus Montmartre for an evening of great significance.

Riel/Mikkelborg/Dahl/Stief

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Alex Riel (Drums / DK)Palle Mikkelborg (Trumpet / DK)Bo Stief (Bass / DK)Carsten Dahl (Piano / DK)

Looking forward to three concerts with four living legends whose names all shine bright on the Danish jazz sky. In 1962-65, Alex Riel was brought in as the house drummer in Jazzhus Montmartre where he with NHØP and Bo Stief especially, learned the craftsmanship by playing with the international stars including names like Dexter Gordon and Ben Webster. Bo Stief also started his career in Montmartre in Store Regnegade, where he accompanied most of the soloists who came through Copenhagen at the time. Palle Mikkelborg is one of Denmark's most innovative and original jazz musicians ever. Since the 1960s he has challenged the musical conventions with his personal trumpet playing, his orchestras and his compositional crossover projects. Last but not least, Carsten Dahl, who as early as 14 years was a well-known studio musician, and at the age of 19 started at the Music Conservatory where he had the legendary American drummer Ed Thigpen as his teacher, before he eventually started playing the piano instead. These four virtuous stars should be experience at close range. We can’t wait!

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Martin Shack (Piano / DK)Christian Vuust (Sax / DK)Morten Ramsbøl (Bass / DK)Morten Lund (Drums / DK)

The title alone gives associations to the album you could easily call the Nordic version of ’Kind of Blue’. Jan Johansson's classic 'Jazz på svenska’ is often the reference point for what is called the Nordic tone of jazz. On Martin Schack's 'Jazz på Dansk', 12 songs, which many Danes have a close and personal relationship with, have been infused with jazz. With Morten Ramsbøl on the bass and Morten Lund behind the drums, Martin Schack has managed to create a highly recommendable album where the imagination runs freely and where the timing is superb. With respect throughout the album, the original melodies are being interpreted and poetically retold, and the result is a warm and summerlike record. Michael Olsen will join with his sax to play some jazz in Danish.

Katrine Madsen Kvartet

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Katrine Madsen (Vocal / DK)Henrik Gunde/Jacob Christoffersen (Piano / DK)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Jonas Johansen (Drums / DK)

We are super excited to welcome Katrine Madsen back to Jazzhus Montmartre with her own quartet. Earlier Katrine Madsen has visited Montmartre with her beautiful interpretations of Ella Fitzgerald. Back then the critics received it well and positive and we are confident that Katrine will deliver again – like she always does. Katrine Madsen Kvartet delivers a fascinating mix of Katrine’s own material and standards - and as always, when Katrine sings, the stage is set for an evening of sit back, relax and enjoy one beautiful song after another. Kathrine Madsen Kvartet as a group is one of the best out there. Henrik Gunde (31/8) and Jacob Christoffersen (1/9) will accompany Madsen from the piano, both are considered to be some of the most vibrant personalities from the Danish jazz scene at the moment.

Isabella Lundgren: Swedish Vocals

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Isabella Lundgren (Vocal / SE)Carl Bagge (Piano / SE)Niklas Fernqvist (Bass / SE)Daniel Fredriksson (Drums / SE)

Isabella Lundgren has a seriousness and a gravity that is unique. She makes time stand still with her charisma and presence that is unlike any other vocalist in Sweden. Her voice is natural, strong and above all, beautiful, like it’s flowing between time and space. Combined with lyrics that tell stories with meaning, Isabella has risen to the top of the Swedish jazz scene and some even proclaims her as the greatest thing that has happened to Swedish jazz in years. Her phrasing is elastic, she is holding and stretching notes with competence that only occurs when most present. Influenced by many, she has the rare artistic ability to make full use of both lyrics and her voice to create an epicenter of musicianship. Do not miss this opportunity to enjoy Swedish Vocals with Isabella Lundgren, Carl Bagge, Niklas Fernqvist and Daniel Fredriksson.

Søren Lee (Guitar / DK)Linley Marthe (Bass / MU)Niclas Campagnol (Drums / SE)

Danish guitarist Søren Lee is back on the scene with full force after focusing on other musical interests for a short period. This night you will have the opportunity to experience the virtuous on stage with his Diversity Trio. His strongest, most pure and dynamic project to date. Joining him on stage is Linley Marthe, born on the island of Mauritius. Linley is considered as one of the best and funkiest electrical bass jazz player in the world. Perhaps best known from his cooperation with Weather Reports founder Joe Zawinul, in the group Zawinul Syndicate. Also on stage this evening is Niclas Campanol. One of the most sought after drummers – not just in Denmark – but in all of Europe. Niclas is one of the most responsive drummers out there, playing with a beat, which in every way must be considered international and totally versatile. Søren Lee Diversity Trio is blues, pure jazz and danceable funk. As if Jimmy Hendrix, Miles Davis and Weather Report got together under the same roof. Look forward to an experience beyond the ordinary.

Ole Kock Hansen (Piano / DK)Thomas Fonnesbæk (Bass / DK)Jesper Løvdal (Tenor Sax / DK)

Ole Kock-Hansen is one of the most significant piano players in Europe. His companionship with NHØP, and his time as leader and organizer for DR’s Big Band has placed him in the most exclusive company in Danish Jazz. Thomas Fonnesbæk, Denmark’s new great international bass player will also be on stage. We know him among other from Lars Janssons trio and like most other Danish bass players including NHØP, Bo Stief, Mads Vinding and Jesper Lundgaard, Thomas’ share the path with Ole this evening. That can also be said about tenor sax player Jesper Løvdal. In 2005 he was rewarded with the Bent Jædig award and like his peers on stage this evening, Jesper belongs in the top of the Danish Jazz elite. We are looking forward to an evening with three highly skilled and respected musicians.

Abekejser

Jon Døssing Bendixen (Keys / DK)Adrian Christensen (Synth Bass / DK)Jeppe Lavsen (Guitar / DK)Rasmus Fisker (Drum Machine / DK)Frederik Bülow (Drums / DK)

Abekejser mixes the heavy beats of hip hop with the fine and exquisite harmonies of the jazz. The inspiration is picked up from everywhere and coded in the colorful jungle machine. The music is performed on everything from moog bass synth to classical guitars and Abekejser travels effortlessly between tight beats, playful improvisation and groovy hooks. No musical dogma is safe when the boys are on stage. Although the majority of the five musicians have a background in jazz and world music, Abekejser threw the double bass on the fire long ago, along with the closed templates. Instead, the orchestra builds their sound on a foundation of strong beats made on a drum machine and an acoustic drum set. On top, crackling synthesizers and distorted guitars are battling to create epic harmonies and catchy melodies. Get ready to be shaken to the core when Monten presents Abekejser.

Arto Järvelä (violin, voice / FI)Tapani Varis (jew harp, overtone flute, double bass / FI)

It is hard to mention Finish folk music without also mentioning the Järvelä family. For generations they have been known and respected throughout the nordic countries as the finest fiddlers of Finland, and therefore it seems fitting that the first finish folk music concert at Montmartre should be with Arto Järvelä og Tapani Varis. They have impressive careers among themselves in bands such as JPP and the Love Tree Ensemble, and their deeply musical way of interpreting the Finnish traditional music can make you feel like you are at a huge rock concert and a small tranquil Finnish sauna at the same time.

Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Marco Mezquida (Piano / ES)Martin Andersen (Drums / DK)

Once again Jesper Bodilsen has gathered an international trio of stature. This evening he is bringing the Catalan super pianist Marco Mezquida along, who has delighted the world with his unbelievable touch and phenomenal musical understanding. Hailing from the same hometown as Bodilsen, Martin Andersen will be the man behind the drums. He has been among the best drummers in Denmark for a long time now and has been playing together with Bodilsen ever since their carriers took off. And of course Bodilsen himself will be playing the bass. The trio debuted at Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2017. Straight after they went to the studio to record their first album which they are now touring with. The music is original with well thought features picked carefully by the trio and demonstrates just how good the ensemble is playing and their great sense of creating melodic atmospheres.

Photo: Mireia Miralles

Arild Andersen Trio

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Arild Andersen (Bass / NO)Tommy Smith (Tenor Sax / UK)Paolo Vinaccia (Drums / IT)

Arild Andersen is one of the most remarkable musicians of the North. His work with Norwegians such as Jan Garbarek, Jon Christensen and Terje Rypdal on ECM, as well as with our own Carsten Dahl, has greatly influenced the sound that we today identify as “Nordic”. His bass tone is unmistakable; it’s both earthly and delicately singing timbre resonates in even the most frozen of souls. On these three nights, he presents his fantastic trio, consisting of two of Europe's most unique musicians: The Scotsman Tommy Smith, whose sublime and lively playing is not to be found anywhere else in Europe, and the Italian resident of Norway Paolo Vinaccia, who generously shares his energy and engaging creativity. Together, they present a beautiful version of contemporary European jazz with a modern day Norwegian touch.

Malene Mortensen

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Malene Mortensen (Vocal / DK)Ole Kock Hansen (Piano / DK)Andreas Svendsen (Drums / DK)Anders Fjeldsted (Bass / DK)

Malene Mortensen is one of Denmark’s most exciting young and established singers. In France, Malene has had great success and has hit the top 10 charts, and she frequently tours Germany and Scandinavia. One understands her popularity after listening to her singing beautiful melodies. Few master this in a way that touches the heart like Malene does. On her latest album, she mixes her own compositions with the jazz standard repertoire. It is beautiful, intense and groovy. On stage will be a diverse trio consisting of the legend Ole Kock Hansen on the piano, young and talented Andreas Svendsen behind the drums and likewise talented Anders Fjeldsted on the bass. We are looking forward to a great evening with Scandinavian vocal jazz of the highest caliber.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Niels Vincentz (Tenor Sax / DK)Søren Kjærgaard (Piano / DK)Thomas Morgan (Bass / US)billy Hart (Drums / US)

After his conservatory education Niels Vincentz has lived in both New York and Djursland (DK). He has worked with names like Kresten Osgood, Hess Is More, Caroline Henderson, Jakob Bro plus many others and over the last couple of years he has made himself noted on numerous distinctive releases such as Kresten Osgoods’ “Sound”, and his own releases with his praised trio, with Billy Hart and Cameron Brown. He has been called “some of the best that has happened to Danish Jazz!” and we definitely agree. Once again Niels is bringing his longtime friend Billy Hart who at an age of 73 is considered one of the most legendary drummers out there. During his long career, he has played with the likes of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, and almost every other jazz giant you can think of. Søren Kjærgaard and Thomas Morgan can also be found in this Danish-American super quartet and we guarantee this will be a magnificent experience.

Mads Vinding (Bass / DK)Dado Moroni (Piano / IT)Niclas Campagnol (Drums / SE)

Star-studded trio jazz is, without hesitation, the line that describes this concert. Mads Vinding Trio has gradually become a kind off concept within jazz. From the beginning, the concept offered a mix of jazz standards and original compositions – always performed with emphasis on the lyrical interplay. Mads Vinding Trio started in 1997 as a project with the Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and drummer Alex Riel. And ever since, a myriad of world class musicians has been invited to join the exclusive trio company. Mads Vinding himself is one of the biggest Danish jazz musicians in his era. Internationally recognized for his original and virtuoso bass playing, He has played with the biggest stars in jazz like Toots Thielemanns, Chet Baker and Stan Getz, to name a few. As chaplain master, Vinding has especially cultivated the trio format with musicians like Enrico Pieranunzi, Billy Hart, Alex Riel, Carsten Dahl and Renee Rosnes. These evenings is a chance to experience how creative and superb an musician Mads Vinding is, when he visits Jazzhus Montmartre with super pianist Dado Moroni and the equilibrist Niclas Campagnol.

Bird Cherry

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Daniel Hägg (Drums / SE)Emma Larsson (Bass / SE)Rasmus Andersson (Guitar / SE)Kalle Widén (Piano / SE)

Bird Cherry is a Swedish multifacetted and dynamic project, but with a fundament based on composer and drummer Daniel Hägg.

Bird Cherry’s music is a journey through low dynamic earnesty to a bombastic crescendo, best described as modern nordic Jazz. Calm nordic melodies wash ashore and roll back again, merging with the sea, only to return in a new shape and with new power. The music makes one’s thoughts go to artists like Bill Frisell, Farvel, Avishai Cohen and Terje Sundby.
