Carsten Dahl Trinity

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Carsten Dahl (Piano / DK)Nils 'Bosse' Davidsen (Bass / DK)Stefan Pasborg (Drums / DK)

A tough and raw trio constellation with the master pianist Carsten Dahl as the leader. Dahl brings one of the country’s most attentive bassists Nils ‘Bosse’ Davidsen and the ultra-dynamic drummer Stefan Pasborg. And the music? Aggressive, flexible, playful, right on the spot and of course tough and raw.

It’s trio music that doesn’t exist elsewhere, which constantly develops and digs out new musical expressions, which no one else has been in the proximity of. In other words: Music going forward with solid roots in and great respect for the already existing. The concerts are based on their recently release "Mirrors Within", released in December 2020 on Storyville Records. The dogma here was to record in a single run without talking to each other.

Koncerterne tager udgangspunkt i deres nyligt udsendte udgivelse "Mirrors Within" som udkom i december 2020 hos Storyville Records. Dogmet her var at indspille ud i en lang køre uden at tale sammen.

Peter Rosendal Kvintet

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Peter Rosendal (Piano / DK)Lars Vissing (Trumpet / DK)Ditte Fromseier Hockings (Violin / DK)Thommy Andersson (Bass / SE)Jacob Høyer (Drums / DK)

Over the years, pianist Peter Rosendal has created his own musical platform in Danish jazz. His compositions and thoughtful playing places him as one of the great original musicians of our time. Rosendal moves with equal emphasis in jazz and folk music, and his musical expression is marked by inspirations from our part of the world as well as from Brazil and the USA. On this night he will be playing alongside musicians who all cover a similarly large field of experience as the conductor himself.

It is highly contemporary, acoustic, and guaranteed satisfying music for both the curious and the experienced listener. Jazz Rag Magazine wrote about Rosendal's latest publication: “Surprisingly accessible”, while journalist Peter H. Larsen briefly stated that Peter Rosendal is not for retainers. Only a few Danish improvisational musicians move around as effortlessly in genre and style transgressions as the pianist with the twisted musical brain. And never the least, Peter Rosendal's release “Trickster” was chosen as the “Best Jazz Release of the Year” in 2020 by JazzSpecial.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Seamus Blake (Tenor Sax / UK)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Martin Andersen (Drums / DK)

This evening we’ll have a visit by the wonderful saxophonist and composer Seamus Blake. Blake is considered one of the great saxophonists of his generation. In recent years, he has unfolded his great musicianship as leader and co-leader of numerous ensembles and has released 13 albums in his own name. His collaborations with e.g., John Scofield, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter have given him a place in the absolute international jazz elite.

The trio with Jesper Bodilsen and Martin Andersen saw the light of day on an international tour in the summer of 2019. Luckily for us, they are coming through Montmartre on this tour. This is a power trio and a cornucopia of intense interplay for everyone who loves high-class improvised music.

Hans samarbejder med bl.a.

Viktoria Tolstoy: Stations

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Viktoria Tolstoy (Vocal / SE)Krister Jonsson (Guitar / SE)Joel Lyssarides (Piano / SE)Mattias Svensson (Bass / SE)Rasmus Kihlberg (Drums / SE)

International media characterizes Viktoria Tolstoy’s voice as crystal clear and unpretentious and natural, and the Swedish singer has also succeeded in manifesting herself as one of the most successful jazz singers in Scandinavia since her debut release in 1996. The new album “Stations” from 2020 is based on her own life story and deals with her strong connection to the home country Sweden and her search for her Russian heritage. Tolstoy elegantly balances genres as jazz, pop, and folk music in an emotional – at times melodramatic – musical universe. Accompanied by her regular band and the rising star Joel Lyssarides, she will present a musical repertoire consisting of both interpretations of newer Scandinavian music and also classical jazz standards.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Michala Østergaard-Nielsen (Drums/Perc / DK)Thomas Gustafsson (Tenor Sax / SE)Staffan Svensson (Trumpet / SE)

"Michala Østergaard-Nielsen personifies in many ways the best in improvisational music, as she has a rare ability to nurture the meeting in the space of performance". The distinguished words framed the reason for the awarding of the Danish drummer, Michala Østergaard-Nielsen, from the prestigious Swedish jazz prize Jazzkannan in 2018. This is a musician who places the greatest emphasis on merging with the tones and letting the immediate moment determine the development of the music. It is music that is very emotional and where the audience is very much an active participant.

Included in this closely played trio are two of Sweden’s extremely fine and significant musicians: Trumpeter Staffan Svensson and tenor saxophonist Thomas Gustafsson - each with prominent careers as conductors. This concert with SounDance is guaranteed to be music that you take home, and music which stays in your mind for a good space of time.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Zier Romme (Piano / DK)Felix Moseholm (Bass / DK)Cornelia Nilsson (Drums / SE)

Fortunately, Denmark is populated with an ever-growing number of talented musicians. One of those who really gets noticed in these years is the pianist Zier Romme. In addition to a well-grown technique and a furiously good musical overview, he owns perhaps the most important thing for a jazz musician; he swings amazingly! If your close your eyes it is like being at a concert with Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington or one of the other icons who also mastered the physical game.

Zier Romme goes to great lengths to challenge himself and his teammates, and here he is accompanied by the incomparable bassist Felix Moseholm, who in these years, among other things, plays with Brad Mehldau. The trio is rounded off by the incredibly swinging drummer Cornelia Nilsson, whose forward-rushing play guarantees an evening with the ideal mix of intellect, spirit and physique. Here, that cocktail is guaranteed from the very first beat.

Gunde on Garner: 100 Years with Erroll

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Henrik Gunde (Piano / DK)Nicolas Kock (Bass / DK)Karsten Bagge (Drums / DK)Eliel Lazo (Congas / CU)

The pianist Henrik Gunde is one of Denmark’s coolest musicians. He fits into all formats and masters most styles and is furthermore gifted with a formidable swing. In recent years Henrik Gunde has thrown himself into music that could have been recorded by the grunting Erroll Garner – the guy with the flying left hand. In several releases and at countless concerts, Gunde has played and revitalized music from all styles in a distinctly "Garnern" manner. You clearly sense that Gunde has studied Garner's rhythmics and his approach to music, but without putting his own originality out of control. The year 2021 marks Erroll Garner's 100th birthday, and it will of course be celebrated with a firework of a concert where Gunde in quartet will perform the quartet's super swinging and "Garnerized" versions of popular music from Denmark, USA and the rest of the world.

Jacob Lindberg (Drums / SE)Oilly Wallace (Alto Sax / DK)Zier Romme (Piano / DK)Matthias Petri (Bass / DK)

Jacob Lindberg is one of the new exciting names on the Danish jazz scene, who you really must keep an eye on. The young Swede has in short time established himself as a competent sideman, but this evening he will be leading his very own quartet at Jazzhus Montmartre.

The drummer has assembled an exemplary quartet consisting of some of the great young jazz musicians in Denmark: Oilly Wallace, Zier Romme and Matthias Petri, who all, like Lindberg himself, are setting their mark in the jazz world. With this team, it’s guaranteed that the music's trembling swing will bring the crowd to a boil, and the band's joy of playing will be felt all the way down to the back rows of the audience.

Simon Spang-Hanssen Epistrophy Septet

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Simon Spang-Hansen (Tenor/Soprano Sax / DK)Erik Kimestad (Trumpet / NO)Fredrik Lundin (Tenor Sax / DK)Mikkel Aagaard (Trombone / DK)Artur Tuznik (Piano / PL)Yasser Morejón Pino (Bass / CU)Anders Mogensen (Drums / DK)

With the tireless and continuously curious saxophonist and composer Simon Spang-Hanssen as front man, we get an energetic and colorful tribute to a number of favorites from the history of jazz spiced up with the composer’s own interest in other musical cultures: Latin America, Africa, The Orient among others.

The format with four brass players plus rhythm section gives rich possibilities to orchestrate almost with a big band-feeling while maintaining the flexibility of a smaller group. In the group generations and stylistically approaches are mixed in an inciting and mutually challenging unit. Shapes, recurring themes and crooked riffs and imaginary folklore will be playfully intertwined. “Epistrophy” was Thelonius Monks’ signature tune and means something like a recurring, punctured ending phrase. This is used to end the manifold of improvisations – and to send off new ones.

Svaneborg Kardyb & Gustaf Ljunggren/Emil De Waal

1. set:

Nikolaj Svaneborg (Wurlitzer/Synthesizer/Piano / DK)Jonas Kardyb (Drums/Perc / DK)

2. set:

Gustaf Ljunggren (Keys/Strings / SE)Emil de Waal (Drums/Perc/Electronics / DK)

This Monten-night features two duos that combine the acoustic and the electronic in minimalistic soundscapes.

The Danish jazz duo Svaneborg Kardyb is a new hope in Danish jazz. After the release of the duo's debut album, “Knob”, in the spring of 2019 a heady year followed with massive attention and critically acclaimed concerts both at home and abroad. The duo made a name for themselves at the Danish Music Awards Jazz 2019 by receiving both the award for "New Talent of the Year" and "Danish Jazz Composer of the Year" for their meditative grooves and the exquisite interaction between them. In the autumn of 2020, the duo released the sequel, "Haven", which is a tribute to nature. The music is created in the earliest mornings over the blackest coffee and has a minimalist and airy expression, where electronic and acoustic sound unite in elegant harmony. Captivating melodies meet deep Nordic moods in a dreamy and groovy universe.

The Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljunggren and the Danish drummer Emil de Waal's musical universe creates a meeting with avant-garde, easy-listening and ethno, which turn into dreamy cinematic surfaces and then into angular destructiveness. Curiosity and transformation bind two versatile musicians together into a symbiotic and ever-evolving musical expression. After the release of the debut album in 2018, which led to a DMA nomination, 200 plays on DR P8 Jazz and numerous concerts on different continents, Gustaf Ljunggren and Emil de Waal are reunited on the new album "Moon". The music is, if possible, even more personally reflective than on the predecessor, and the songs travels deep into the duo's musical history.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Bo Stief (Bass / DK)Hans Ulrik (Tenor Sax / DK)Henrik Gunde (Piano / DK)Alex Riel (Drums / DK)

National Danish acoustic bass-icon Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (NHØP) left our world way too soon in 2005. As tradition goes, this evening four musicians show their deep respect and pay their homage to this great innovator.

Bo Stief has been a close ear and eyewitness to NHØP's life, mainly because the two friends had large parts of their musical upbringing at Montmartre. Stief talks about his experiences with NHØP, and the music played will be related to these stories. Stief will be accompanied by three great Danish musicians; Hans Ulrik, Henrik Gunde and the drummer, who has been touring endlessly with NHØP, Alex Riel.

The group enters NHØP’s musical universe and gives us their interpretations of his musical output. We will witness a glorious journey in music, where US-jazz walks hand in hand with traditional Danish songs. And through the entire concert, the spirit of NHØP and his enormous position in Danish jazz will be present.

Danmarks nationale jazz-ikon bassisten Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen forlod alt for tidligt vores verden i 2005.

Ionata/Moroni/Bodilsen/Andersen

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Max Ionata (Tenor Sax / IT)Dado Moroni (Piano / IT)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Martin Andersen (Drums / DK)

One of the great European north/south collaborations in jazz can be found in this distinguished quartet. Two Danes and two Italians: four musicians who joins together with love and honesty in a musically extremely successful project. Here the authenticity of the countries' uniqueness is preserved. Both the musicians and the audience are challenged and delighted with the endless possibilities that comes, as long as you let the music decide.

Stylistically, the music is difficult to classify, because all four musicians each play with their own personality and desire to take the lead. But do not expect a war on the stage - rather look forward to a blissful musical experience with a happy common outcome.

Dreamcatcher 3.0 feat. Mathias Heise

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Per Gade (Guitar / DK)Mathias Heise (Keys/Harmonica / DK)Peter Hansen (Bass / DK)Rasmus Lund (Drums / DK)

Dreamcatcher was originally formed 25 years ago with Jørgen Emborg behind the piano. The group re-emerged in 2019 with the two new members Mathias Heise and Rasmus Lund. Heise’s phenomenal playing adds an extra dimension to the band’s melodic fusion of funk, jazz, latin and rock. Rasmus Lund is an extremely popular drummer characterized by his versality and appears therefore in many different musical constellations.

Dreamcatcher additionally consists of Per Gade who has been a regular member of DR’s Bigband during the past several years and has played and toured most of the world with the legendary drummer Billy Cobham. The other founder, bassist Peter Hansen, has been a regular member in Jørgen Emborg’s ensembles and is furthermore the composer of most of Dreamcatcher’s songs. The group has just finished a new album, which is expected to be released in the spring of 2021.

Mathias Heise Quartet: From Toots to Infinity

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Mathias Heise (Harmonica / DK)Pelle Von Bülow (Guitar / DK)Thomas Fonnesbæk (Bass / DK)Zoltán Csörsz (Drums / SE)

Toots Thielemans has set massive footsteps in jazz history with his unique approach to the chromatic harmonica. On his own he managed to unite this peculiar instrument with bebop and modern jazz and thus became one of jazz's legends. Mathias Heise is an award-winning Danish harmonica player who has won the World Cup in chromatic jazz harmonica and is seen by many as Toots' successor.

On this evening, in the company of an eminent team of musicians, he will take up the mantle of the famous Belgian and at the same time show new and exciting roads for this particular instrument. The repertoire will feature both Toots' big hits, but also exciting, original compositions.
