Mads Tolling & the Mads Men: Playing the 60s

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Mads Tolling (Violin / DK)Anders Fjeldsted (Bass / DK)Karsten Bagge (Drums / DK)Thomas Bornø (Piano / DK)

Mads Tolling's many years in the United States have so far led to two Grammy Awards and eight years of membership in bassist Stanley Clarke's band as well as in the group the Turtle Island Quartet. His latest project is called "Mads Tolling & The Mads Men" which with the album "Playing the 60s" explores the wonderful melodies and themes from movies, radio and TV shows from the 60's.

The album has received great praise in the world press and has been played a lot on jazz radio in the United States. The music ranges from pulsating swing versions of "A Taste of Honey" and "Meet the Flintstones" to Cuban rhythms in "All Along the Watchtower" and finds soul in "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy." Included in the Danish version of "Mads Men" are Thomas Bornø on piano, Anders Fjeldsted on bass and the experienced Karsten Bagge takes care of the drums.

Musikken går fra pulserende swingversioner af ”A Taste of Honey” og ”Meet the Flintstones” til cubanske rytmer i ”All Along the Watchtower” og finder soul i ”Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.”

Nils Landgren/Jan Lundgren: Kristallen

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Nils Landgren (Trombone/Vocal / SE)Jan Lundgren (Piano / SE)

These two musicians are among Sweden's finest jazz artists. The trombone player and singer Nils Landgren is primarily known for his funky tunes, and beautiful vocal on his many soul/jazz releases. The pianist Jan Lundgren is at the very top of the list of heirs to Jan Johansson's piano throne, which has been empty since the legend Johansson passed away back in 1968.

The experienced listener will argue that this is an almost impossible genre mix. But it is exactly the differences of these two musicians, that is the element of wonder. The deep respect they have for each other encourages a musical output that works almost perfectly. We can expect both dew-fresh versions of Swedish folk melodies and compositions by Keith Jarrett, Abdullah Ibrahim and Leonard Bernstein. Everything is performed superbly and captivatingly by the two musicians.

Svaneborg Kardyb & Gustaf Ljunggren/Emil De Waal

1. set:

Nikolaj Svaneborg (Wurlitzer/Synthesizer/Piano / DK)Jonas Kardyb (Drums/Perc / DK)

2. set:

Gustaf Ljunggren (Keys/Strings / SE)Emil de Waal (Drums/Perc/Electronics / DK)

This Monten-night features two duos that combine the acoustic and the electronic in minimalistic soundscapes.

The Danish jazz duo Svaneborg Kardyb is a new hope in Danish jazz. After the release of the duo's debut album, “Knob”, in the spring of 2019 a heady year followed with massive attention and critically acclaimed concerts both at home and abroad. The duo made a name for themselves at the Danish Music Awards Jazz 2019 by receiving both the award for "New Talent of the Year" and "Danish Jazz Composer of the Year" for their meditative grooves and the exquisite interaction between them. In the autumn of 2020, the duo released the sequel, "Haven", which is a tribute to nature. The music is created in the earliest mornings over the blackest coffee and has a minimalist and airy expression, where electronic and acoustic sound unite in elegant harmony. Captivating melodies meet deep Nordic moods in a dreamy and groovy universe.

The Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljunggren and the Danish drummer Emil de Waal's musical universe creates a meeting with avant-garde, easy-listening and ethno, which turn into dreamy cinematic surfaces and then into angular destructiveness. Curiosity and transformation bind two versatile musicians together into a symbiotic and ever-evolving musical expression. After the release of the debut album in 2018, which led to a DMA nomination, 200 plays on DR P8 Jazz and numerous concerts on different continents, Gustaf Ljunggren and Emil de Waal are reunited on the new album "Moon". The music is, if possible, even more personally reflective than on the predecessor, and the songs travels deep into the duo's musical history.

Julia Werup feat. Thomas Blachman: The Thrill of Love

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Julia Werup (Vocal / SE)Thomas Blachman (Drums/Producer / DK)Sven Erik Lundeqvist (Piano / SE)Johnny Åman (Bass / FI)

The poet and singer Julia Werup move into new territory in her latest musical project entitled ‘The Thrill of Loving You’. As a singer she is self-taught and has found her ability to effortlessly hit the notes precisely, far from the music conservatory's rehearsal rooms. Her voice and narrative have acquired a special and recognizable sound through an often complex life.

With her on stage are pianist Sven Erik Lundeqvist, bassist Johnny Åman and drummer and producer Thomas Blachman. The group experiments with some of the mythical tracks from the great songbook of jazz and is searching for a sound that is meditative and groovy. This is music that rises from a style-conscious, Nordic collaboration that will sound elegant and swinging and at the same time reach to the soul's longing for clarification and hope.

The Thrill of Loving You”.

Alex Riel (Drums / DK)Marian Petrescu (Piano (RO))Joel Locher (Bass / DE)

The members of this trio got to know each other back in 2017 on a small tour in Germany and Switzerland. And with such experienced musicians behind the instruments, the trio's musical concept cannot be described as new and untested. Instead, it is designed for an experienced interplay that moves through different styles and time periods - from Oscar Peterson to Keith Jarrett.

With a spectacular elegance and virtuoso technique, the Romanian star pianist, Marian Petrescu, will take lead in these concerts. By his side is the internationally renowned bassist Joel Locher from Stuttgart, and behind the drums sits none other than the Danish drum legend, Alex Riel, who in the autumn of 2020 celebrated his 80th birthday with a series of fabulous concerts at Jazzhus Montmartre. This is trio jazz from the very top shelf, filled with swing, eccentricity and a unique level of quality.

Gunde on Garner: 100 Years with Erroll

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Henrik Gunde (Piano / DK)Nicolas Kock (Bass / DK)Karsten Bagge (Drums / DK)Rune Harder Olsen (Congas / DK)

The pianist Henrik Gunde is one of Denmark’s coolest musicians. He fits into all formats and masters most styles and is furthermore gifted with a formidable swing. In recent years Henrik Gunde has thrown himself into music that could have been recorded by the grunting Erroll Garner – the guy with the flying left hand. In several releases and at countless concerts, Gunde has played and revitalized music from all styles in a distinctly "Garnern" manner. You clearly sense that Gunde has studied Garner's rhythmics and his approach to music, but without putting his own originality out of control. The year 2021 marks Erroll Garner's 100th birthday, and it will of course be celebrated with a firework of a concert where Gunde in quartet will perform the quartet's super swinging and "Garnerized" versions of popular music from Denmark, USA and the rest of the world.

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Emil Savery (Hammon Organ / DK)Matthias Petri (Bass / DK)Simon Albertsen (Drums / DK)

Emil Savery Trio's musical mission is to explore opposing musical polarities and unfold them through their enormous energy. This approach to their music secured them the prize as the winners of the Jazz Competition 2020.

The trio does not play in one particular genre, but instead draws inspiration from all the music that ignites their creative spark. The trio's music is full of freedom and spontaneity, spiced with groove and crisp hippie vibes from Savery's hammond organ. You can therefore expect music for both body and soul at the crossroads between compositions and improvisations. There will be dancing, there will be close listening, there will be dreaming - whatever the music inspires you to.

Emil Savery Trio is one of the four finalists in Jazzkonkurrencen 2020 and has in that context been given the possibility to perform as a headliner at Jazzhus Montmartre. The concert is presented in collaboration with JazzDanmark and Gangstedfonden.

Conductor Jan Kaspersen is behind the piano still leading this classic quintet after nearly 40 years of collaboration. A highly respected band of veteran status playing on a level rarely seen in Denmark – or abroad!

Anders Bergcrantz and Bob Rockwell are in front as soloist of absolute international class accompanied by Niels Ryde, Ole Rømer and the conducter himself. It’s music with drive, fantasy and energy. With its immediate raw swingy expression, added a splash of humor now and then, the quintet arranges a vivid and warm musical experience. There is room for play in the music, which is inspired by jazz, blues, rock and latin – and don’t be surprised if a couple of Monk-titles or jazz standards slips into the program of the concert.

It’s always interesting to follow the development in music in other countries; especially when the bet is on personal contributions to already established music. The French singer and composer Manu Le Prince is in front of the row when we talk of Brazilian music; whether bossa-nova, samba or newer still-growing forms. Le Prince has experience in fusion music as well as more pop-oriented music, but her current expression approaches the authentic Braz-jazz more and more. Here, she presents, with her own group consisting of Brazilian musicians, a repertoire that celebrates the Brazilian songwriter giants João Gilberto and Tom Jobim.

Anders Malta’s Almost BigBand consists of some of the fantastic musicians from the jazz scene of Copenhagen. Led by Anders Malta, the big band will present brand new music composed and arranged by Malta. It’s modern big band music with a well-established grounding in the fundament who Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and Carla Bley founded within the modern school of composition for bigger ensembles and big bands. The music focuses on the grand timbres and the good melody which are brilliantly unfolded by the big band’s powerful soloists.

Seamus Blake (Tenor Sax / UK)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Martin Andersen (Drums / DK)

This evening we’ll have a visit by the wonderful saxophonist and composer Seamus Blake. Blake is considered one of the great saxophonists of his generation. In recent years, he has unfolded his great musicianship as leader and co-leader of numerous ensembles and has released 13 albums in his own name. His collaborations with e.g., John Scofield, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter have given him a place in the absolute international jazz elite.

The trio with Jesper Bodilsen and Martin Andersen saw the light of day on an international tour in the summer of 2019. Luckily for us, they are coming through Montmartre on this tour. This is a power trio and a cornucopia of intense interplay for everyone who loves high-class improvised music.

Hans samarbejder med bl.a.

Viktoria Tolstoy: Stations

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Viktoria Tolstoy (Vocal / SE)Krister Jonsson (Guitar / SE)Joel Lyssarides (Piano / SE)Mattias Svensson (Bass / SE)Rasmus Kihlberg (Drums / SE)

International media characterizes Viktoria Tolstoy’s voice as crystal clear and unpretentious and natural, and the Swedish singer has also succeeded in manifesting herself as one of the most successful jazz singers in Scandinavia since her debut release in 1996. The new album “Stations” from 2020 is based on her own life story and deals with her strong connection to the home country Sweden and her search for her Russian heritage. Tolstoy elegantly balances genres as jazz, pop, and folk music in an emotional – at times melodramatic – musical universe. Accompanied by her regular band and the rising star Joel Lyssarides, she will present a musical repertoire consisting of both interpretations of newer Scandinavian music and also classical jazz standards.

Jacob Lindberg Quartet

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Jacob Lindberg (Drums / SE)Oilly Wallace (Alto Sax / DK)Zier Romme (Piano / DK)Matthias Petri (Bass / DK)

Jacob Lindberg is one of the new exciting names on the Danish jazz scene, who you really must keep an eye on. The young Swede has in short time established himself as a competent sideman, but this evening he will be leading his very own quartet at Jazzhus Montmartre.

The drummer has assembled an exemplary quartet consisting of some of the great young jazz musicians in Denmark: Oilly Wallace, Zier Romme and Matthias Petri, who all, like Lindberg himself, are setting their mark in the jazz world. With this team, it’s guaranteed that the music's trembling swing will bring the crowd to a boil, and the band's joy of playing will be felt all the way down to the back rows of the audience.

Simon Spang-Hanssen Epistrophy Septet

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Simon Spang-Hansen (Tenor/Soprano Sax / DK)Erik Kimestad (Trumpet / NO)Fredrik Lundin (Tenor Sax / DK)Mikkel Aagaard (Trombone / DK)Artur Tuznik (Piano / PL)Yasser Morejón Pino (Bass / CU)Anders Mogensen (Drums / DK)

With the tireless and continuously curious saxophonist and composer Simon Spang-Hanssen as front man, we get an energetic and colorful tribute to a number of favorites from the history of jazz spiced up with the composer’s own interest in other musical cultures: Latin America, Africa, The Orient among others.

The format with four brass players plus rhythm section gives rich possibilities to orchestrate almost with a big band-feeling while maintaining the flexibility of a smaller group. In the group generations and stylistically approaches are mixed in an inciting and mutually challenging unit. Shapes, recurring themes and crooked riffs and imaginary folklore will be playfully intertwined. “Epistrophy” was Thelonius Monks’ signature tune and means something like a recurring, punctured ending phrase. This is used to end the manifold of improvisations – and to send off new ones.

Marilyn Mazur (Percussion / DK)Jon Balke (Piano / NO)Torben Snekkestad (Sax / NO)

Percussionist Marilyn Mazur is always a life-affirming experience with her many exciting instruments and timbres. In 2020 Marilyn has assembled this explosive trio with three personal and visionary voices within Nordic jazz improvisation. They have a kinship of sound and gather here in a completely fresh musical assignation. The trio will challenge each other in loosely structured shared rhythmical progressions. Look forward to big, intense and life-affirming music without boundaries.
