Peter Bernstein Scandinavian Connection

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Peter Bernstein (Guitar / US)Martin Schack (Piano / DK)Jesper Bodilsen (Bass / DK)Anders Mogensen (Drums / DK)

Danish pianist Martin Schack is part of the group of young jazz musicians who hungrily pick up from jazz gone-by and adds their own DNA to the music. In this case we are focusing on the physical part of the acoustic jazz, with a here-and-now-feeling, where body, soul and intellect join hands. Shack brings along a fine Danish rhythm-section; bassist Jesper Bodilsen and drummer Anders Mogensen, and introduces American guitarist Peter Bernstein as special guest at this exclusive concert. Bernstein belongs to the fine, younger part of the east American guitar elite and will definitely make this evening memorable.

Cæcilie Norby: A Tribute to Nancy Wilson

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Cæcilie Norby (Vocal / DK)Claus Waidtløw (Saxophone / DK)SØREN BEBE (Piano / DK)Kristor Brødsgaard (Bass / DK)Janus Templeton (Drums / DK)

Cæcilie Norby is a highly loved vocalist in Denmark, who is known for going her own way. She is the daughter of an opera singer and a classical composer and if it hadn’t been for one album with the American vocalist and jazz legend Nancy Wilson, she would probably be playing classical music today. Norby saw a musical role model in Nancy Wilson, who enriched the world for more than 50 years with her musicality and a smooth pop/jazz repertoire filled with hits. Cæcilie Norby and this Danish super quartet celebrates a vocalist in a league of her own with four passionate summer concerts.

Students/under 26: Half price

Warren Vaché (Trumpet / US)Jacob Fischer (Guitar / DK)Neal Miner (Bass / US)Ronnie Gardiner 5/9 (Drums / US)Jesper Thilo 6/9 (Saxophone / DK)

Warren Vaché is a rare guest in Copenhagen and Montmartre’s intimate setting is a perfect tool to showcase the warmth, beautiful sound, dynamic sensitivity and musical imagination that Warren Vaché can produce from the cornet, trumpet and fluegelhorn. He is strongly rooted in the jazz legacy having learned from the people who created it, while still being an unpredictable, innovative and daring improviser - a very unusual combination. With the Danish guitar virtuosi Jacob Fischer and the American bassist Neal Miner, we have an excellent trio! Like that wasn’t enough, they’ll even be joined by the legends Ronnie Gardiner on drums (5/9) and Jesper Thilo on saxophone (6/9) – incredible!

Students / under 26: Half price

Jazz Tributaries meet Art Blakey ft. Rodney Green

Jesper Riis (Trumpet / DK)Karl-Martin Almqvist (Tenor Sax / SE)Søren Møller (Piano / DK)Kristin Korb (Bass / Vocal / US)Rodney Green (Drums / US)

2019 is the year the drummer-icon Art Blakey would have turned a hundred years old. We celebrate the birthday by ”re-imagining” some of his biggest Jazz Messenger projects, including new, original lyrics and arrangements. These will celebrate, not only Art Blakey, but also those around him such as Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, Curtis Fuller, Freddie Hubbard and more. The music will be presented by an international All-Star constellation, consisting of Jesper Riis on trumpet, Karl-Martin Almqvist playing the tenor sax, Søren Møller on piano and Kristin Korb playing the bass and singing. But who is taking over the drums, you might think? The group has gotten no other than Rodney Green to join them on this tour – a world famous drummer who bursted the jazz scene at the age of 19 years old, when he was asked to be a part of Diana Krall’s band. These concerts will be grand!

Martin Fabricius Trio

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Martin Fabricius (Vibraphone / DK)Andreas Markus (Bass / DK)Jacob Hatholt (Drums / DK)

Since the foundation of his trio in 2007 Copenhagen-based vibraphonist and composer Martin Fabricius enthuses with a laid-back sound universe of catchy melodies and subtle improvisation. A relaxed groove emerges from the harmonic interplay between Fabricius and his two musical companions Andreas Markus and Jacob Hatholt. Every song is like musical journey that welcomes the listener. Due to his self-developed modern playing techniques Fabricius is rated as one of today’s most important players of the vibraphone. His unmistakeable feeling for subtle melodies will create plenty of magical moments this evening.

Lars Danielsson: Liberetto III

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Lars Danielsson (Bass / Cello)Grégory Privat (Piano)John Parricelli (Guitar)Magnus Öström (Drums / Perc)

The Swedish bass player, composer and conductor Lars Danielsson is on top of things. This group has been with him for years and they have developed an almost telepathic interplay. This kind of music is difficult to label, as the inspiration comes from both classical music, new experimental jazz and Danielsson’s home country’s melancholy treasury of songs. Beautiful sounds change into aggressive solos while the stillness and timelessness are always present.

Students / under 26: Half price

Tamir Hendelman: Plays Monk & Ellington

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Tamir Hendelman (Piano / US)

Please open your heart for this very interesting American pianist. Tamir Hendelman is at the keys in the Clayton/Hamilton Orchestra, and then most jazz fans know that we are in the hands of the established part of jazz; where we focus on the fine tunes, the beautiful harmonic excursions and the never-ending life of improvisational possibilities. In other words: The bottomless bag of American jazz-standards. Reviews from Hendelman’s homeland mention a brilliant and playful musician, who never sucks up to the listener, but constantly seeks for new gems in the music. We are looking forward to witness this in Copenhagen.

Students / under 26: 130 DKK

Tag vel imod denne yderst interessante amerikanske pianist. These nights we are celebrating Paolo Russo's 50 years with two concerts that Russo has named “Cinquanta” – dedicated to his musical universe. Russo has invited some of the many international musicians he has played with throughout his long career. You can look forward to a musical journey that moves from clear, Nordic atmospheres, to rich Mediterranean aromas and South American rhythms with lots of room for improvisation, but with focal point in Russo’s latest album, “Overland”. Russo has, throughout his career, released 14 albums as a solo artist and bandleader and has played all over the world – which can be heard in his superior skills on the piano and the bandoneon and in his playful and colorful interaction with the accompanying musicians.

Special guests: Gerard Presencer (27/9) (Trumpet / UK) Nico Gori (27/9) (Clarinet / IT) Bjarke Falgren (28/9) (Violin / DK) Lelo Nika (28/9) (Accordion / SE)

Kalaha / Monten

Emil de Waal (Drums, Electronics / DK)Niclas Knudsen (Guitar, Talk-box / DK)Mikael ‘Spejderrobot’ Elkjær (Computer, Electronics / DK)

Kalaha is inspired by both West African funk, techno-rave and jazz. Their music is a constantly changing mix of quirky ideas, unrestrained energi and precision. The band has achieved to renew their live show again and again, through a long series of concerts. Their newest initiative is a spectacular lighting design, where the fusion between sound and lights accentuates that Kalaha must be experienced live. The concept ”Monten” presents musicians who are not afraid to exceed the limits of genres by merging them and creating new musical expressions. Genres such as soul, hiphop, folk and electronic music will be weaved together when the borders of jazz are explored.

He has studied at both Berklee and Juillard and he is a popular sideman when the young generation of East Coast musicians needs some raw energy and sophisticated guitar. The American jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel says: “Of the younger cats, Lage is THE one. He's a wonderful player. Scary actually!" Fine words from someone who really appreciates good six-string guitar play.

Thomas Clausen (Piano / DK)Carlos Malta (Saxophone/Flute / BR)Romulo Duarte (Bass / BR)Niclas Campagnol (Drums / SE)Special guest: Tomas Franck (Tenor Sax / DK)

Thomas Clausen is turning 70 on October 5th. Clausen has been the leading pianist within what was previously called “modern jazz” which today covers a huge range within jazz. His brilliant technique and unquenchable desire to challenge himself is legendary and his ability to continuously acquire new opportunities to develop and refine his artistic expression still creates great respect. On this occasion he has gathered this new constellation who reflects Clausen’s musical universe. The music varies from Clausen’s established expression with jazz as main focus to his more recent desire to collaborate with Brazilian musicians. We will travel far and wide in Thomas Clausen’s musical world.

Jessica Lauren's Naga 5 ft. Tamar Osborn

Tamar Osborn (Woodwinds / UK)Jessica Lauren (Keys/Vocal/Perc / UK)Suman Joshi (Bass / UK)David ‘Booie’ Gallagher (Perc / UK)Cosimo Keita Cadore (Drums / IT)

It is an honor to present Jessica Lauren's Naga 5 ft. Tamar Osborn in collaboration with Teater Momentum in Odense.

Jessica Lauren is without a doubt one of the most important figures on the UK-jazz scene. She has been largely neglected in connection with the blooming of the "new" jazz scene in the UK. Lauren has, to a great extent, inspired and led the new scene, and this should be honored to a much greater extent than it is the case. She has been part of the space jazz collective Emanative from the beginning, and in her own name she has published three albums over a period of 25 years. Most recently, she released the masterpiece Almería in 2018, and this is the album she comes to Denmark with.

Another great figure from the very same scene will join Lauren on stage, namely Tamar Osborn, who’s also known as the band leader in Collocutor. With the rest of the team, they will explore different aspects of jazz, world and Latin, just as the cultural melting pot in London is known for. Their soundscapes are playful, and although there’s a lot going on rhythmically, they manage to keep their minimalist approach to composition with floating lines and hypnotic grooves.

Monten
Sunday, October 13 at 20.00 (8 PM)

Girls in Airports / Monten

Martin Stender (Saxophone / DK)Lars Greve (Sax/Clarinet / DK)Mathias Holm (Keys / DK)Victor Dybbroe (Perc / DK)Mads Forsby (Drums / DK)

The five band members of Girls in Airports got together in 2009 and since then they have been expanding their sound universe with new musical inspiration from modern jazz, global folklore, minimalism, synthesizer music and an atmospheric sound. The critics have compared the band to names such as Brian Eno, Radiohead, King Crimson, Jon Hassell, Sun Ra and Jan Garbarek. “Girls in Airports performed a very fascinating and special demonstration while exploring the unbound and unfamiliar” - Politiken.

The concept ”Monten” presents musicians who are not afraid to exceed the limits of genres by merging them and creating new musical expressions. Genres such as soul, hiphop, folk and electronic music will be weaved together when the borders of jazz are explored.
