ACT 25 at Montmartre: Iiro Rantala & Marius Neset

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Iiro Rantala (Piano / FI)Marius Neset (Tenor Sax / NO)

We are hosting three very special nights at Montmartre celebrating the 25-year anniversary of the German record label ACT, which has had an important role on the European jazz scene since the early 90s. On this particular night, you can look forward to hearing one of the biggest stars on ACT as well as one of the biggest European jazz pianists in the shape of Iiro Rantala. The Finnish jazz artist's approach to music captures the same elegance as Oscar Peterson, the same humor as Errol Garner and the same vitality as Esbjörn Svensson. He will perform together with Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset, whose own compositions indicate a big inspiration from fellow saxophone players such as Wayne Shorter and Michael Brecker.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Cæcilie Norby (Vokal / DK)Marius Neset (Tenor Sax / NO)Sebastian Studnitzky (Piano/Trumpet / DE)Lars Danielsson (Bass / SE)Morten Lund (Drums / DK)

Denmark’s jazz diva number 1, Cæcilie Norby, invites you to a special Christimas concert. Since Cæcilie Norby released her first album on Blue Note, she has repeatedly presented a versatile and nuanced vocal. When she publishes renowned albums (now on ACT), her wide tonal range is often described as being both powerfull and poetic – and always with a distinctive musical timing. She has published critically acclaimed albums and is often compared to no less than Monica Zetterlund, Dinah Washington and Aretha Franklin. To perform the Christmas songs she loves most, she is accompanied of Marius Neset on tenor sax, Sebastian Studnitzky at the piano, Lars Danielsson on bass and Morten Lund behind the drum set. This is a rare opportunity to experience Cæcilie Norby in a very intimate setting and with space for musical surprises in the spark of the moment.

Bobo Moreno/Ole Kock Hansen/Bo Stief

Bobo Moreno (Vokal / DK)Ole Kock-Hansen (Piano / DK)Bo Stief (Bass / DK)

The concerts between Christmas and New Year with this trio have become a popular tradition with sold-out houses. Bobo Moreno is superbly supported by two of Denmark's greatest jazz musicians throughout the ages. Whether the trio is performing in numbers by Paul Simon, Duke Ellington or songs from the Danish song treasure, it always happens with a fantastic musical surplus. We can safely say that the trio will warm well up to the New Year.

Live on Vinyl & Dansk Fløde

Julia Werup (Vocals/Spoken Word / SE)Bjørn Vidø (Guitar/Concept / DK)Peter Stenbæk (Percussion / DK)Simon Littauer (Modular Synth / DK)Rasmus Juel (Trumpet / DK)Simon Dyhr (Bass / DK)Mikael Fleron (Baritone Sax / DK)Marte Schau (Vocals / NO)Jørgen Lauritsen (Piano / DK)Ole Stenum (Synth / DK)Kristoffer Raasted (Percussion/Modular Synth / DK)Lars Nybo (Drums / DK)Jørgen Saabye (Keys / DK)No1 (Cut Master / DK)Jesper “Jokeren” Dahl (Spoken Word/Rap / DK)

This is a unique chance to experience a concert being cut directly on vinyl. Each set lasts 12 minutes - exactly the time available on a 10" vinyl. Dansk Fløde will bring the vintage machine and with the rest of the Live On Vinyl team they will show the delicate art of cutting a vinyl record whilst the music is playing.

Live on Vinyl is a battle between the acoustic and electronic. Between the planned themes and the unpredictable. An intense fight for getting as much juice on the vinyl as possible. The musical style will present electric and acoustic elements, spiced up with spoken words and singing. Live on Vinyl has played at Pumpehuset and Roskilde Festival (The headphone concert). Cause the vinyl machine is so heavy and cumbersome, it’s only the 2nd official concert in Copenhagen, besides a series of closed concerts in the band’s studio Freezone Sound Design.

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Paolo Fresu (Trumpet/Flugelhorn / IT)Daniele di Bonaventura (Accordion / IT)

The Italian trumpet and flugelhorn player, Paolo Fresu, is one of the most important jazz musicians on the European scene today. He has collaborated with a large part of the European elite as well as top-shelf artists from the US. However, his well-deserved reputation is due to his creative outings as a solo artist and band leader, which has earned him a large following that admires his expansive performances and fine soft tone, which, according to some critics, carries much resemblance to a certain Chet Baker. Paolo Fresu will perform together with fellow countryman, Daniele di Bonaventura, who is a bandoneonist, whose collaborations extend from classical music to contemporary music, from jazz to tango and world music.

Bo Stief (Bass / DK)Ayi Solomon (Percussion / GA)Krister Jonsson (Guitar / SE)

The Danish virtuoso bassist Bo Stief has an unusual ability to put together musical projects with extremely talented musicians, which always results in both captivating and original output. This time around we will have the pleasure of hearing Bo Stief perform together with Swedish guitarist Krister Jonsson and Ghanaian percussionist Ayi Solomon. At the tender age of 17 Bo Stief was already making his mark at Jazzhus Montmartre where he used to be a substitute musician who would perform with the likes of Dexter Gordon, Yusef Lateef and Ben Webster. Since then he has toured all over the world with the biggest stars in jazz, but he still returns to his roots and musical home at Montmartre from time to time.

FOLK at Montmartre: Nordic

Erik Rydvall (Nyckelharpa / SE)Magnus Zetterlind (Mandolin / SE)Anders Löfberg (Mandolin / SE)

Montmartre are kicking the folk music concerts of this year off in style with the phenomenal Swedish trio Nordic. They are one of the most well-known folk bands in Scandinavia and their original, energetic and rough, but beautiful music takes them to stages across the globe. They renew the sound of traditional music from the Nordic countries in such a masterful way that it is no surprise that this music is experiencing a renaissance at the moment.

Thomas Fonnesbæk (Bass / DK)Justin Kauflin (piano / US)

Justin Kauflin is a fascinating and rather new act on the international jazz scene. As a young boy he became blind, and when sports, computer games etc. became impossible, the piano took a central role in his life. Justin Kauflin is a blessed musician, who only needs to hear a song once to learn it while playing with a sensitivity that instantly grabs the attention of the audience. There is a good reason why Quincy Jones has produced both the documentary “Keep On Keepin’ On” about Justin Kauflin’s life and his debut album. He will bless the stage together with one of the most prominent

(Art by: Finn Nygaard)

John Venkiah (Piano/Vocals / SE)Kristoffer Rostedt (Drums / SE)Simon Petersson (Bass / SE)Simon Thorsen (Tenor Sax / DK)

The Malmö-based jazz trio celebrate the release of their second album with a dedicated concert! John Venkiah Trio, who's last album was released in 2014, will be playing music from the new album Elevation, which consists of only original tunes. Venkiah’s original tunes and tonal language affect the groups sound with both Nordic melancholia and playfulness. The influences vary, with roots among legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and piano-giants Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau.

”A firm grasp on tradition, fresh, personal ideas, brilliant technique, delicate touch, well developed harmonization and a phrasing with true authority – in John Venkiah we find a rich, not to mention fully equipped young jazz pianist.” - Sven Bjerstedt, Ystad Allehanda.

Tickets only available at the door. Tickets is DKK 100 each and only DKK 50 for students/under 26.

Phronesis

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Jasper Høiby (Bass / DK)Ivo Neame (Piano / UK)Anton Eger (Drums / NO)

Scandinavian/British jazz trio Phronesis have the ability to excite, inspire and move people in a way that few bands are able to do. Formed in 2005 by Danish double-bass player Jasper Høiby, their charismatic live performances have captured the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide and prompted Jon Newey (editor of Jazzwise Magazine) to describe them as “the most exciting and imaginative piano trio since EST”.

‘The Behemoth’ modtog som forgængeren store kritikerroser. Bl.a. kaldte Politiken pladen for »smuk jazz af allerfineste kaliber«, mens All About Jazz skrev: ”a must-hear release”.

Lundgren/Wakenius/Svensson/Riel

“Premium” is Montmartre’s series of rare intimate concerts with jazz giants that you cannot normally meet on small intimate stages. These concerts are priced above the normal tickets to cover costs and travel for these heavy-weights.
Jan Lundgren (Piano / SE)Ulf Wakenius (Guitar / SE)Mattias Svensson (Bass / SE)Alex Riel (Drums / DK)

The Swedish jazz pianist and artistic leader of Jazzhus Montmartre plays with a poetic sensitivity that goes straight to the listener’s heart. He lifts the legacy of Sweden's great pianist, Jan Johansson like no other. He will set the mood on the stage together with Mattias Svensson, who has previously been part of Jan Lundgren Trio. Another Swede in the line-up is one of the world’s best guitarists in the shape of Ulf Wakenius. During his prestigious career, Ulf Wakenius has been the first-choice guitarist of Oscar Peterson, NHØP and many others, and he always manages to capture his audience whether he plays upbeat or a ballad. Last but not least we can look forward to hearing Alex Riel. For over 60 years has Alex Riel enriched the jazz audience in particular, being one of the most important drummers in Europe. The Danish musician has played with jazz legends such as Bill Evans, Dexter Gordon and Ben Webster.

Teitur

Teitur (Vocal/Piano / FO)

Since the release of the album Story Music in 2013, Teitur has certainly not been unproductive. Amongst other things, he has written and recorded classical music with the wonder child Nico Muhly, been talking to Ted Talks in Vancouver and toured in South America.

Now the productive musician has completed the recordings for his 9th studio album, titled 'I Want to Be Kind'. The album was recorded in collaboration with producer Thomas Bartlett (Sufjan Stevens, The National, Glen Hansard, Martha Wainwright, etc.). It's an album about finding peace, home, happiness and enjoying the little things in life. The release date is still secret, but the songs can be heard for the first time at these first two concerts of the "I Want to Be Kind"-tour.

I Want to Be Kind"-tour.

“Upcoming” is Montmartre’s series of talent concerts where upcoming artists test the boundaries of jazz.
Pernille Mejer (Vocals/Arranger / DK)Anna Roemer (Guitar / DK)Calle Brickman (Piano / SE)Matthias Petri (Bass / DK)Andreas Svendsen (Drums / DK)

Pernille Mejer has a broad approach to her instrument, the voice, be it interpretation of lyrics, wordless improvisation, or arrangements with the voice as an integrated part of the sound. She has toured Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, the USA and Canada as well as cooperated with the Danish Radio Big Band as vocalist in the ensemble, Touché – Jazz a Cappella. IRIS is her second solo album.

IRIS is a tribute to the mesmerizing tone of Wayne Shorter and his composition by the very same name. Furthermore, it is the unique colours and patterns of the human eye. The group has a modern rich sound, now and then, varied with more transparent duo constellations. The music moves between tradition and innovation, complexity and spontaneity. The repertoire consists of less-known standards from the 60’s to which lyrics in Danish have been written as well as interpretations of Danish songs which, by the tools of jazz, investigate and rediscover the essence of the songs.

Tickets only available at the door. Tickets is DKK 100 each and only DKK 50 for students/under 26.

Billetter købes kun i døren. Normalpris 100 kr. og 50 kr. for studerende/unge under 26.
