Legendary instrumentalist, arranger, conductor, composer and producer. Brazilian Jaques Morelenbaum has many talents, and this time he shows his musical abilities with the cello. As part of the group Nova Banda Morelenbaum has played with the master of Bossa Nova Antonio Carlos Jobim and released a recording that resulted in a Grammy. Along with the two great talents Lula Galvao and Rafael Barata he is forming Cello Samba Trio, which provides a panoramic view to the development of samba, right from the compositions of the roots to contemporary works. It is hard to avoid being enamored of the highly intimate atmosphere, that the three gentlemen give samba when they perform their music easily and elegant.

"The music spans from fragile sincerity, to the embracing and challenging, where strong solistic performances and great compositions invites the listener into a organic and lyrical universe...” These are the words of a jury of well-established Danish jazz-musicians, announcing I Just Came From The Moon as the winners of the national Ung Jazz (Young Jazz) competition in May, 2016. The band recently released its debut album, Hoax, which captures everything from country ballads to ostinato-based improvisation, and in this connection, IJCFTM is looking forward to visiting Montmartre.

Sådan lød det fra juryen, da aarhusianske I Just Came From The Moon vandt Ung Jazz 2016.

She has won many awards including the prestigious Ben Webster Award in 2014 and is a two-time Danish Music Award winner for "Best Vocal Jazz Album", which she won in 2007 and 2010. In spite of currently living in the US as well as having performed all over the world, Sinne Eeg keeps the Scandinavian melancholy settled in her music. Her sound is modern and Nordic with clear references to legendary jazz singers such as Nancy Wilson and Benny Carter. Her concerts are known for being filled with humor, a charming presence and musical bonanza, which comes to show by playfully taking chances on stage.

Denmark and the world recently lost a great jazz artist, namely Horace Parlan. He was resident in Denmark from 1973, where he played in Montmartre for the first time, and at the same occasion met his wife Norma.

Horace based his unique piano style on the possibilities left available to him, after suffering polio as a child, but he made the most out of it, and became a master of voicings, and lyricism. His roots in the blues tradition were always present, and he remained active up until nearly 80 years old, when blindness made it impossible to continue.

Horace leaves behind a unique body of important contributions to the jazz world. He is famous for his work with Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, and not the least his fine albums on Blue Note, as a bandleader in trio and larger formats.

For Danish jazz, he became a blessing, and the Danish Jazz world has benefitted from Horace’s contributions through all the years he stayed here. With his kind and gentle being, and permanent encouragement to us all, he became a sort of holy man. Until the end, he continued going out and listen to American and Danish jazz artists, and whenever he was in the room, there was a certain magic.

This memorial concert is a tribute to Horace and his fantastic music, left behind for us to play and enjoy. The line of musicians performing the program all had a connection to Horace in one way or another. They all represent the top of Danish Jazz having paid their dues through long careers. The “Love & Peace Band” and “US Four” will play, and other combinations will present both Jan Lundgren and Christina von Bülow. This will be a very special and unique afternoon concert, a tribute to Horace Parlan.

The concert is sponsored by Ben Webster Foundation and Paradise Jazz.

Claire Martin is one of the most prominent jazz singers in the UK, and she has toured all over the world in the past 30 years. Jazz Times USA and US Magazine Journal has previously rated her among the finest female jazz singers in the world. She has won numerous awards, which include two British Jazz Awards within the category "Best Vocalist" in 2009 and 2010. She has collaborated with famous musicians such as Kenny Barron, Richard Rodney Bennett and Martin Taylor. We look forward to three nights in Jazzhus Montmartre with top-notch vocal jazz when Claire Martin will take the stage.

The young award-winning mouth harpist Mathias Heise who won the prestigious Ben Webster Award as the youngest person ever will pay tribute to Toots Thielemans with a memorial concert. Toots Thielemans has set his name in stone in jazz history with his unique skills on the chromatic harmonica. He managed to effortlessly blend bebop with modern jazz. His album "Footprints" from 1990 is a beautiful demonstration of his artistic vision, and with this album as a point of departure Mathias Heise is going to honour one of his role models as well as giving his take on the future direction of the chromatic harmonica. He will be accompanied by Henrik Gunde who is one of the most in-demand jazz pianists in Denmark, and Felix Moseholm who is one of the absolute biggest talents on the double bass. Lastly, drummer Andreas Svendsen who frequently tours with international jazz acts shall lay the foundation for a jazzy night.

The 23-year-old Mathias Heise has through his many accolades and extraordinary performances attracted a lot of attention both domestically and abroad. Besides mastering the difficult chromatic harmonica, he is an exceptional composer and pianist. At the mere age of 20, he was awarded as the world?s best on the chromatic harmonica at the World Harmonica Festival in Germany in 2013, and in 2015 he was awarded as the new best jazz act in Denmark. Immense talent surrounds him in his band Mathias Heise Quadrillion, which consist of other young talented jazz players, namely Mads Christiansen, David Vang and Aksel Stadel Borum. Mathias Heise Quadrillion has managed to create a very unique, personal and contemporary soundscape, which goes beyond any specific genre. The band has decided to label this genre blurring music as FuRoJazz. "Fu" stands for future, funk and fusion, while "Ro" stands for rock, and then of course jazz. Thus, the Mathias Heise Quadrillion ear catching compositions is a combination of jazzy harmonies and improvisation with rock and funk music. It is lined up to be a colourful and sophisticated night in the house!

It is going to be absolutely interesting when the Moroccan guembri player and vocalist, Majid Bekkas, will perform together with one of Sweden’s most recognized jazz musicians Goran Kajfeš and the two Danish jazz giants Carsten Dahl and Stefan Pasborg. Even though Majid Bekkas knows his guembri to the fullest, he also has a classical music upbringing and is a professor at the music conservatory in the Moroccan capital, Rabat. Trumpeter Goran Kajfes draws influences from many different corners the jazz genre, which can be heard through his African and Middle Eastern inspirations combined with his take on futuristic jazz and classical minimalism. His album “X/Y” was hailed by The Independent as jazz album of the year in 2011. Both Carsten Dahl and Stefan Pasborg are two of the most significant jazz musicians in Denmark. They have played together in various constellations for many years, but this will be a unique chance to see them in a different format with the multi-talented Moroccan Majid Bekkas and Swedish music innovator Goran Kajfeš. Do not miss out on this opportunity.

Together they released, under the name Jacob Young Group, the critically acclaimed album “Forever Young” in 2014. Tours all over Europe and the US followed. He has previously toured and played frequently in a duo together with famous Norwegian Jazz singer Karin Krog. His influence comes significantly from two guitar greats, Jim Hall and John Abercrombie, whom he has taken lessons from as well. It is going to be memorable when the Norwegian guitarist plays at Montmartre together with his group.

The formidable American pianist Randy Ingram has been hailed by Jazz Times USA as one of the most gifted on the American jazz scene. He will perform together with the Swedish singer Edda Magnason, who is known for her leading role both as an actress and singer in the Swedish movie ”Waltz for Monica”, where she plays the role as Monica Zetterlund. Besides Edda Magnason, Randy Ingram will be accompanied by Drew Gress on the bass and Mark Ferber on the drums. Drew Gress is also playing bass on Ingram’s latest album ”The Wandering”, which has been described as his most personal to date. We are looking forward to present Randy Ingram Trio, when they take the stage with special guest Edda Magnason.

Ben Webster was a frequent presence at Jazzhus Montmartre in the 60s and one of the most prominent jazz figures in Copenhagen back then. Alex Riel will pay a tribute to the American saxophone legend. For over 60 years has Alex Riel enriched the jazz audience in particular, being one of the most important drummers in Europe. He has played with jazz legends such as Bill Evans, Dexter Gordon and said Ben Webster. Jesper Thilo, Heine Hansen and Jesper Lundgaard will accompany Alex Riel for his Ben Webster tribute. Jesper Thilo has previously been compared to Ben Webster when it comes to playing style. Phenomenal jazz awaits.

The Swedish jazz pianist and artistic leader of Montmartre play with a superb poetic sensitivity that goes straight to the heart of the listener. He lifts the legacy of Sweden's great pianist, Jan Johansson, like no other. And when he interprets Jan Johanssons musical legacy, it is with great respect and curiosity. These tribute concerts are primarily based on the music from "Jazz på Svenska", "Jazz på Ryska" og "Jazz på Ungerska". The harmonies are retained but Lundgren has certainly put his own imprint on the music. With Mattias Svensson, who has also been a regular part of Jan Lundgren Trio, and the string quartet something additional unique is added. Jan Lundgren opens this year's Copenhagen Jazz Festival at Jazzhus Montmartre with a seductive and unforgettable concert experience, which has been a great success with sold-out houses around Europe.

The extremely talented and versatile drummer Morten Lund brings together a stellar team of musical friends to this year's Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2017. Already as a 6-year-old Morten Lund sat for first time on the drum chair and beat rhythms and bars. It was the start of a career which has over 60 releases as a sideman, critically acclaimed albums and concerts around the world in the constellation with Stefano Bollani and Jesper Bodilsen and not least numerous concerts at Jazzhus Montmartre. Besides the three major Danish jazz talents; Jesper Riis, Jacob Christoffersen and Morten Ramsbøl, Morten Lund also invited the Italian saxfonist Max Ionata, which by critics has been credited for pushing the boundaries of jazz. This constellation is guaranteed to showcase a playful approach to the musical works of the great legends of jazz.

The Danish guitarist and composer Jakob Bro has won the Danish Music Awards for best jazz album several times, most recently in 2015 with the album "Gefion". He will perform with his trio, which consists of bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Joey Baron. In September last year Jakob Bro released the critically acclaimed album "Streams" on ECM Records. ECM-founder and producer Manfred Eicher har previously mentioned that Thomas Morgan is one of the most interesting and talented bassists he has heard. The American avant-garde drummer Joey Baron was a member of the Bill Frisell Band for a decade and has played with an impressive list of musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker, John Scofield and Stan Getz. It is truly going to be a jazz tour de force, when this trio takes over the Montmartre stage during this year's Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
